Open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, the market house offers a wide variety of vendors with lunch options from organic to ethnic foods, coffee, snacks and home-made baked goods and candies. A brew pub offers locally made beers and coffee bar provides brewed coffee and tea, as well as bags of beans to brew at home. Before you leave, pick up fresh flowers, meats or cheese, or baked goods to take home. Some vendors open on other days, but days noted gives the best variety of choices.
We visited Central Market at around 1:00 p.m. on a Thursday. I had not been there for decades and was surprised to find that most of the building was used by vendors selling lunch. We stopped at a few different places and assembled our lunch. There is a variety of food vendors to choose from. Lots of different types of food to be found. There are also some vendors selling produce, sweets, etc. I would recommend planning to go to Central Market on a Thursday or Saturday between 10 - noon. They are only open these two days of the week.
We visited York to be with family and went to the Central Market one morning. This is a Great market, with a full array of stalls selling fruits, vegetables, meats, fish, cooked foods, crafts and gifts. It's located inside the old Central Market Place built in the late 1800's, so the atmosphere is very 'small town', friendly and warm. Good people, good foods and good time!
My family and I already had plans to go to the York Garden Show on Saturday when I read an article about the market in the AAA magazine. Naturally we had to stop there first! Due to all those one-way streets we got lost on the way, and didn't really have enough time to explore the market to the fullest. However we definitely mean to return. The York Central Market delights all the senses. The interior of the building is beautiful, and it really looks more like a cathedral than a market. The smells from the food and coffee are heavenly, and the displays of the merchandise - vegetables, plants, candies, nuts, baked goods, dairy items, candles, etc. - are so colorful. The prices for the food varies, but there are enough choices for every budget. We really enjoyed the pretzel dogs and the hot pretzel dough sandwiches. Given more time we would have also liked to try the soups and the luscious looking desserts. The market closes at 2 p.m. on Saturdays, but several of the vendors were already covering up their wares at around 1:45. Make sure you get there early and allow at least one hour to take it all in!
If you go to York Pa to do the Factory Tours.....don't miss the York Central Market House.....a huge building with many Vendors carrying everything from flowers, spices, candy, veggies, fruit, candles and all kinds of goodies you can't find anywhere else and you just may find it there. They have a lot of Vendors serving hamburgers, hot dogs, pizza, etc. Check the hours online and days open before you go.
Probably the best place in the city of York to pick up a good variety of edibles, as well as other products such as crafts and gifts. Very easy parking within a block.
I remember the Central Market 20 years ago and it was very nice with many vendors, today it is half the size and not much to see. Open all year around, nice if you get to York, Pa., but nothing in York City to do or see. Very rough place, high crime area. I will never go back, sorry. it was a nice town 40 years ago.
My family stopped here to get some lunch while visiting the York area! It was such a fun market with so much to see and taste! So many surprises and something for everyone. We were even entertained by a group of young violinists just outside the market. I'm so glad that we went. I so wish that I lived closer, as there is nothing like this in our home community!
Every visitback to YOrk the Market is on the top of my list of things to do! You will love the many different stands. Home made baked goods, with Pennsylvania Dutch goodies, Shoefly pie, Woopie pies, sugar cakes, relishes....all so delicious! Hand made craft items. Love the fresh sea food, Yummy! Oh, wish I could drop in for lunch today!
Great place to go for Saturday breakfast. I enjoyed visiting the various stalls plus they have multiple food stands where you can get ready to eat foods.
