This trail was not difficult and it gives a beautiful perspective of Half Dome and the beautiful valley surrounding it.
The Panorama Trail offers some of the most incredible views of Yosemite Valley, Half Dome and Liberty Dome that you can't see anywhere else! The trailhead begins is at Glacier Point and ends at Happy Isles. Since its a one way trail to the valley floor the best way to hike it is to purchase a $25 bus ticket from Yosemite Falls Lodge and take the 8:30 a.m. bus. The trail has amazing views from the reverse side of Half Dome, Illiloutte Falls, Nevada Falls and Vernal Falls. When you get to the top of Nevada Falls, you have the option to cross the bridge and descend the Mist Trail which is more scenic but can be wet and slippery or the John Muir Trail which is a little longer but safer. The Panorama Trail is rated strenuous, 8.2 miles with 3,200 ft. loss and 975 ft. gain in elevation. Depending on your fitness level and how many photos you may stop to take - it takes about 4-1/2 - 6 hours to complete.
This trail starts at Glacier Point and goes around 9 miles, down /then up / then down. Tough, but we thought we did well. The last 0.75 miles is down these granite steps that are killer. We were sore for days, but the view was worth it!
This is a lesser known but wonderful hike that originates from the vista at Glacier Point. It easy to take the bus up...and then hike down. You'll cross several water falls and get some wonderful and unique views of the beautiful Yosemite backcountry. Ample water available along the way during most seasons...bring a filter. Great views of the valley. And you'll cross some of Yosemite's most famous features on the way down...like Nevada Falls and Vernal Fall and touch on the John Muir Trail.
Have done this many times in the Spring and early Summer, when the waterfalls are full and then rapidly declining.Very nice long day walk for the fit. Some take the horse trail zigzags, but i don't and use the Mist Trail, with proper footwear.Too bad DMC does not sell handmade italian Pivetta Muir Trails anymore!!You might cross paths with a brown "black bear" , so i recommend wearing a tiny bell.Bring lots of water. And a space blanket. ETC.Always check the weather forecast before a hike in the park, as people have died in sudden storms, like the unforecast worst winter storm of the 1970s that blew in very quickly.
Only take this hike if you are in shape and without small children. Massive elevation changes. One of the most scenic and beautiful hikes I have ever been on though. Not much can rival the views
If you are up for an 8mile hike, I highly recommend taking the Panorama trail from Glacier Point down to Nevada Falls, then take the Mist trail etc. down past Vernal falls back to the valley. When the shuttle is running (probably May-Oct?), you can buy a one-way ticket up to Glacier Point and hike down. Otherwise you'll have to have someone in your group drop you off at Glacier Point. The Panorama trail goes down via switchbacks about 1.4 miles to Illiloutte Falls, which are small but beautiful. then comes the hard part where you hike up the Panorama Cliffs about 800 feet. Then down again to Nevada Falls. You will not see many people on the trail until you get to Nevada Falls. Fantastic Views along the way.
We took the bus to Glacier Point and hiked down to the valley. We passed by Illouette Falls and then climbed up the trail, down the trail, up the trail...to Nevada Falls. Nevada Falls is gorgeous and well worth the hike.
The Yosemite Panorama Trail starts at Glacier Point and traverses the hillsides all the way down to Yosemite Valley. It ends not far from a bus stop, so you can get back to camp or Curry Village easily. Typically, one takes a bus to Glacier Point and hikes down. The 9-mile trail is beautiful, crossing several waterfalls with views of even more waterfalls. It crosses Nevada Falls, which is spectacular, even in the fall when the water is low. However, the 9 miles downhill is *very* hard on your knees and feet, even with good boots, so don't do it as the first hike of your visit, or you may be unable to hike for several days after that (sore muscles, feet, and aching knees). It offers SO MANY wonderful sights and waterfall experiences (including the trail in the spray of a waterfall), that it's decidedly worth doing at least once. An unforgettable experience!
