The day we went the museum was closed but we were able to wander through the outdoor exhibit. The grandkids loved looking at the different tanks, missiles and helicopters.
What a great place to visit and take in all the US Army history, visit Main Post and check out the new way of life for the Warfighter's....Well done!!
while this listing is what the website calls itself, the title in my heading is the actual working name, so it may be listed at least two ways. this is the second time I've been here and it keeps getting better. it's mostly vehicles from WWII and later, displayed both inside and outside. the fort is very large, but just requires a picture id and possible car inspection to get on post, usually very quick. they do soldier orientations in the very large museum building[the old PX for you old time fort bliss people], but just ask as the museum is usually still open.
The conference at the museum was just breaking up. The exhibits take you on a set of groupings that are mostly vehicles and from the earliest days including offices and uniforms from those eras. Want to see a Sherman tank from WW-II? How about an Abrams from Desert Storm? adopt an artifact put one here. German panzer? Russian armor? Jeeps, APC's trucks. Outside are the rockets and missiles and more armor.
What a wonderful place to connect the dots of history! This museum has many awesome displays to highlight the powerful service our military has contributed to this nation in the areas of Air Defense Artillery and more. I spent about two hours here, but wish I had time to spend much more. On my next trip to El Paso, I have to do a follow up. Great place!
This is now the 1st Armored Division - Old Ironsides Museum, since they are moving them in and air defense out. Disappointed because air defense equipment is the entire reason we went.
Very informative. Outside the building it is very easy to step back in time and imagine the different ages of this fort. Nice shopping mall and theater with a very very large chess set on the plaza.fun experience in a serious setting.
It is entirely free (donation requested but not required). It has an outdoor area of tanks and helicopters, etc. That are pretty cool to look at. Inside they have history from Indian days to present. This won't take you long to see, but worth fitting it in if you are in the area.
There are lots of jeeps, tanks, and humvees to see, as well as many historic artifacts and pictures. This museum is free and well worth the trip.
Museum is very nice, parking is big and exhibit is very impressive. If you are into this kind of exhibit you should pay a visit.
