So your in Altus to do some wine tasting (the main reason most folks visit this town). On the back road going North out of town, you will pass this small church. It well worth taking a few moments out of your day to stop here. The small church is nice enough, nothing special, but the combination of the church itself, their well maintained grounds, and a beautiful view helps calm and focus. A very nice stop along the way......
We always end our wine tasting tour at the church over look. One final taste and some cheese and crackers. Great ending to a fun day trip!
Drive up the hill to St. Mary's. The view is one of the most beautiful in the state of Arkansas. You can see the Arkansas River and at least three different counties. The churchyard is charming.
Located on the way up to Wiederkehr Winery - this church has a panoramic view of the valley below & if you know about it, you can see the church from across the valley. It's beautiful!
beautiful old small church with a stunning view that our group stopped at on our wine tour. Take a few minutes for a visit.
My Mom, whose parents were immigrants from Germany, was born in Altus, Arkansas in 1917. She was baptized at St. Mary's and went to church and school there until she moved away as an adult. Many of my family who stayed there their entire lives are buried in the cemetery next to the church. The last time I went there was when I attended a family reunion almost 25 years ago and will be going with my new husband the end of October. I so look forward to showing him where my family roots began. It gives me great pride in how this community has preserved this incredible piece of history and architecture that was in large part crafted by so many talented immigrants who loved this parish and embraced the great opportunities this country provided to people who were willing to work hard. This church is a true treasure.
Worth a stop to see the beautiful paintings and ceiling. The church was built in the early 1900's and is breathtaking. Once outside, enjoy the view from the hilltop. More breathtaking views!
If you in Ozark or Altus you have to stop here to see the church and the view of Altus from the top. Bring your camera and enjoy.
Do yourself a favor, pull off the road at the curve, and stop in to see this historical gem. After reading a few things about the church, I was expecting a nice church, but the architectural beauty surprised me. Old world, European-style church in a little Arkansas town! Stainless glass windows are amazing, and the view from the church to the river valley below is so pretty.
Did a quick stop at St. Mary's Catholic Church during our Altus Winery tour. Church sits up on hill and the views are great. Church is very pretty. Had the whole place to ourselves to enjoy. Make sure you turn around and view the pipe organ on second floor above entrance.
