Stopped off here for an hour whilst passing through Augusta. Could have stayed for longer. Free entrance and lovely friendly staff at the visitor center. Note the visitor center closes at 4pm but the parking is open until dusk. Great photo opportunities of the river and the canal and the lock. Level walk (although we did not do much of it) and would be great to hire bikes (not far away) and cycle the trail. When we return to Georgia next year we will almost certainly do just that. Would recommend.
Very nice facilities near the Savannah River and Augusta Canal with walking trails and even the ability to kayak.
Came here after touring the Interpretive Center at Enterprise Mill so I was familiar with the history. It was a beautiful day and the view of the river was marvelous. I enjoyed the walk along the river banks flanking the canal. You can walk or bike a long distance, but I only went as far as the first crossing downstream of the canal. It's a steep climb back up to the Visitor Center which is about 50 feet above the canal. The location is somewhat concealed and a GPS would be a great help to get you there.
A nice location to get away from the city and stroll along the river. One can get a nice view of the river and canal locks. I stopped by after work on a recent trip to Augusta and wish I had more time before it got dark.
I love exploring historic sites and also enjoy spending time in nature. Savannah river has many stunning views to offer and this is certainly one of them. There are several walking trails along the river and the canal. Also it is possible to rent a canoe or kayak and explore the canal that way.
We ended up here kind of serendipitously with an hour to walk and play. Just beautiful- old locks with a path going between the river and the canal. In the short span we walked, we saw ducks, turtles, a lizard and even a snake, which was trying hard not to be seen. So worth the time and so good to be outside.
Just went running at the Rapids area today and walked into the visitor's center for the first time. Folks were super friendly and willing to talk about kayaking and canoe rentals as well as some of the other activities and history of the area. Well worth the stop.
The area is very nice, quiet, and beautiful. There are play areas for kids. walking & bike paths around the canal and across the dam, with rapids off in the view. Great picture opportunities
Good walking trail along the river. There's a old mill and dam. There are fountains for people and dogs. There's a dock to deploy canoe / kayak. The canal is flat for a leisurely walk / bike. It goes on for miles as part of the greenway. But, most people will go from the visitor center and 1-3 miles and back. Very busy weekends and holidays.
Another great place to see in Augusta! The visitors center is very informative and you can rent a bike at the Bike Peddler which is in the lower parking lot as you enter. The kayaking and fishing are fantastic
