This was my first time white water rafting. Made reservations over the phone and the staff were very friendly. Once we arrived, we were given the option to use wetsuits or just splash jackets. Our guide was Brandon and he was wonderful! Our time on the river lasted about 2 hours. Brandon taught us alot about the river, the levels of white water, the Nantahala area, and even about kayaking (my daughter and I would like to try that next). He joked around with my 12 year old son and kept us all laughing while providing great instruction and keeping us all safe. Once we were back at the store other staff members greeted us with smiles, asked how we liked our trip, and even posed for pictures with us. The price was the best in the area and we weren't hit with surprise charges for anything extra. I can't wait to go back!
Beautiful trip...awesome guides... Great fun! Be sure to ask for Sam or Jenna. They might be in the Grand Canyon however, but when they are back say hi for me! Go with the ones who take good care of you. It's a nice easy ride down the peaceful river. A couple of bumps make it fun.
Liked the flexibility of going out on the water during the week. Open 7 days a week, not just weekends. Our guide was very personable and gave us individualized attention and instruction. Red was the best informational guide ever- make sure you get the square bear and beaver shark stories!!! Coming back for that level 5 soon.
BE sure to book a trip with Sam - great stories, great person. We enjoyed his company and expert guidance on the Nantahala River. We weren't sure how rough it might be or how wet we would get, but it was cool. We are sailors and used to bif waves and wild waters, but this was calm fun..and very scenic. worth the $. Good times! We enjoyed meeting Jenn too shes a great front desk gal and picture taker and they make a great couple! Stop and say hi for us!Jon and Terri
Ken and Juliet run a first class operation and hire really great young people. My son and I did a ducky trip down the Nantahala with their guided tours and had a blast. Don't look anywhere else because these folks can take care of you.
We recently visited Western NC/TN border for some outdoorsy activities. The trip was centered around a full-day (Saturday) rafting trip with ERA. We selected the Ocoee Class 3/4 trip, which fit our party of 6 (relatively) young adults well. We met them at their outpost and took the van with the guides down to the river. The van trip was ~45 minutes, and we could leave our stuff (towels, change of clothes, money) in the van the entire time. The van met us at our lunch break (convenient!) and at the end of the trip.First, ERA looked unique in that we only had 2 rafts from the company out at the time of the start of the trip. In comparison to the other companies with buses of people, we felt like we were getting a friendlier, more personal experience. Our guide, "Red", was especially enthusiastic and approachable while also having decades of experience rafting and a wealth of knowledge about the river and the area in general. We got a quick safety briefing before rafting. On the river, it was very exciting and lots of fun. Red was a bit adventurous with us, not taking us through the easiest way. We had enough of a challenge as well as enough easy going times the first part of the day. We stopped for lunch midway through, which were deli meat sandwiches, cookies and beverages. There were bathrooms nearby at our stop, and there was the option to get into different clothes if needed. The second half of the day included more rapids and was faster paced. This was my favorite part of the trip, especially being up front. We hit a lot Class 4s. A couple people in our party fell out of the raft at one point, but they were easily brought back in and/or picked up. We had a ton of fun. We got to swim and run around in the woods a little bit at another stop, which was a quick one. Overall, our guide made sure we had a great experience. He gave us some information about the river while we were gliding along. He provided good direction and chose routes with enough challenging aspects but nothing ever felt dangerous. The company was very patient with me when we were trying to find the outpost (we probably called about 10 times that morning and kept losing service.) They also provided information about nearby campgrounds and other attractions. I would definitely recommend this company over others (I've tried another one in the past) because of their experienced, knowledgeable, friendly guides, their more personal interactions, and their customer service overall. They'll listen to your party's particular preferences and concerns and provide you with a memorable experience.
For our family vacation we decided to try white water rafting. We called and made reservations and the staff was very helpful and friendly. We had a party of 12 family and friends, two rafts, one adult and one teenagers. We had a blast! Our guide was captain Dan, he was fabulous, it was not only fun but informative, we learned a lot of the river and rafting. Many of us were beginners and fear we may have had quickly disappeared on we started our river ride. Needless to say we were soaking wet by the end mostly from the water fights between our two rafts. Great stress released for parents!!!! Would highly recommend and do again. Family oriented, lots of fun, friendly staff, safety oriented, and a great time for everyone. Thanks to Sarge and Dan for helping us make some great vacation memories.
ERA is a small, top notch rafting company in the Nantahala Gorge. You will get personal attention and not have to endure being herded like cattle with a big crowd. Their guides are professional and experts on big whitewater. Safety is huge for me when I'm on big water and I trust their guides with my life. I can't say that about every outfitter in the gorge. While the Nanty isn't extreme, it does come with its own unique issues such as water temperature. I would certainly trust them on the Ocoee and Cheoah rivers, which have big water and big consequences. They also offer excellent kayak instruction from some of the best boaters in the Southeast. If you want to raise the bar on your kayaking ability, ERA is the place to go.
Our Boy Scout troop booked a day with ERA. We had 30+ people! about 25 scouts. We scheduled one trip with full guides and inflatable kayaks (duckies), followed by a run on our own, without guides, on the Nantahala. In the booking process, communication was not always clear, but things worked out fine once we got there. That was mostly because they were very flexible and accommodating. They started us with some instruction at the shop. Ken sat us down and talked the scouts through handling the duckies, paddling, and safety, then a brief overview of the interesting parts of the river. We then put on wetsuits and headed up river. We used a combination of tandems for the inexperienced boys, with an adult in the stern, and singles for the older guys. The guides were great, helping with both safety and fun. After the first run, some of the boys backed out of the second. We decided to ask for two guides, since we were not confident we could maneuver the duckies to assist a scout that got into trouble. ERA was open to whatever we wanted to do, and helped make sure we had a great time, safely.Highly recommend ERA for scout groups or any other. When I take my family back to the Nantahala, I'll be working with ERA.
These guys and gals are great, have a good sense of humor, and did a wonderful job as our hosts on our trip today. It was our second visit and we will be back!
