Very kid friendly. We went for a craft show held in the park--Merry Go Round festival. Well set up and lots of cheap rides for the kids.
This was a wonderful stop one afternoon after visiting the Earl Scruggs Museum. The carousel is kept under a roof to Hurd from the elements. It had finished raining recently, to the park was pretty empty. For just one quarter a person we rode the beautiful carousel, just the 4 people in our group. The sounds and lights were something out if another decade! The nice gentleman loved our enthusiasm about the ride. Since no one was just in line we got a brief walking tour. The room where they repair the horses by hand, an old music organ, etc. the talk was not long as the weather was quickly clearing clearing a folks moving around the park were wanting a ride the beautiful carousel
sitting in a residential part of Shelby, NC is the City park. THere you will find a Carousel that for just 50 cents you can take a ride. What a wonderful find. Everything is original. The horses go up and down and the music is heavenly. I felt like a little kid again. SOmething everyone needs to do at least once in their lives. I highly recommend this.
The park offers different things for all ages. It also has dog training, walking paths and a swimming pool. It also has fall foliage this time of year.
My six year old step son loves to go to Shelby City Park to play. I like the fact that there are plenty of places to sit and the restroom facilities are clean. The train is awesome.
When family and friends come to visit one of the "highlights" of their visits is a ride on "The Carousel." We are" children of all ages" recalling wonderful youthful memories. Some of us canstill get on the horses, others can sit and enjoy the moment. Listening to the calliope is "just the best" Now, if we only could "catch the brass ring" would be the ultimate ride. Thanks Shelby for THE CAROUSEL!
The Shelby City park is one of the nicest recreation centers we have seen for a town the size of Shelby. Ball fields, golf course, recently-refurbished pool, indoor basketball courts and, to top it off, a 1950s size miniature train that we rode in as kids and a beautifully restored carousel. These are all focal points for the community and for visitors as well. It is always fun to go there. Everything is free except for nominal admissions to the pool, train and carousel.
We rode the train and the merry-go-round and played in the play area. It was alot of fun!! My 4 year old grandson had a blast. He loved the train ride! The price was very family friendly and we all could participate without worry about the cost. We will go back to play if we are in Shelby again.
The Shelby City Park has a restored 1920 Herschell Spellman Carrousel. This Carrousel 's setting is in a beautiful wooden pavilion that was built just for it. Next to this building is the Mickey Shull Izzi Rotary Train Depot and an authentic Miniature Train with tracks modeled after real GM Electro-Motive F3 Streamliner. These are fully functioning rides and the cost for a ride on either one is only 50 cents. So if you are Hwy 74 going past Shelby be sure to stop and take a look or ride.
Some while back I wrote a review about Shelby City Park and thought it was great. I recently went back and they have made it even better. There is new sports complex with beautiful baseball fields, playground, and paved walking tracks. On the other side the carrousel and train seem to be more popular than ever. Amazing place no matter where you are from.
