The santuário is just 15mun by bus from city center and is a magical place to visit. I recomend not to be lazy and go walking up Hill and down with the unique cable car. Walling up Hill, pay attention of the small houses with real size Jesus history.. Very cool even if you are not religious. At the top there is a nice coffe to relax and read a litle bit with a nice view. Going down in the cable car is not the best experience ever but worth it for the history.
It's a must go! The Santuario do Bom Jesus has a bit of everything: nice landscape surrounding it, nice panoramic view of Braga from the mountains, cool architecture and beautiful front gardens.
My wife and I have visit numerous Catholic Churches in various parts the world, but none has dramatic as the one at Bom Jesus do Monte. The Altar had the display of the Passion of Christ from his being handed over by Pontius Pilate to his Crucifixion.
Take the lift up, visit the grounds around the sanctuary, peek into the sanctuary itself, but, by all means, do climb back using the stairs. It for for these stairs that the place is famous for, and justly so! The small chapels along the way, depicting scenes from Jesus' Passion, are ill-maintained and somewhat disappointing.
Centerpiece of the Santuario is the main alter, absolutely stunning in the depiction of the crucifixion...never seen anything like it. Art features events of "Good Jesus": healing the sick, raising the dead, forgiving sinners. You don't have to climb the steps, there's parking at Sanctuary level. Also, all buildings are undergoing pressure washing. It appears to be about half done. Really makes a difference.
old santuary with very beautiful palces to walk around, nice gardens, small lake where you can rent a small boat.A must do is to visit the oldest funicular in the world moving by water counterbalancing built in 1882. Near you can also have the opportunity to ride a horse.
A marvelous view which on its own justifies the visit.Unfortunately we could not enter the church due to maintenace works. Good place to stroll around after a lengthy lunch.do not climb the stone staits from the Miradouro to the Santuário, unless you are fit . If you have the time than you can admite the neat building works. Several hotels adjourning th site will be handy if you are considering a different sort of stay, for instance a honey moon
A beautifull place that will stay on your mind forever, I visited the place at the sunset and it was magical... love it
The most special thing about this place is its location and everything around, it's not only some stairs and a church... It's more than that! You almost have a mystical sense around the place, the church, the garden, the statues all around the place and breathtaking view of Braga will make your visit indispensable!
We came to Bom Jesus do Monte via bus so there was no climb for us :) But we did go down the stairs to the circular miradouro and it is really beautiful, so the climb back up was not that bad!
