Lovely museum. Full of some beautiful artefacts, and a wealth of information. Small cafe and gift shop. Good hour spent there, for only 1.50 admission fee. Well worth it.
The museum is very easy to find and the staff are very knowledgeable. We went to see the Japanese craft demonstrations but were pleased to be able to join in and make our ownmodel. Very educational but a lot of fun. Go wwhen they have a craft demonstration.
We called in today on an impulse, having visited the botanic gardens opposite. What a surprise - great displays covering all oriental countries, and additionally some artifacts from ancient Egypt which were fantastic. The entrance fees were very reasonable, everwhere was clean and well presented - would not hesitate to visit again in the future.
Great place to take children to explore the mysteries of the orient. Small area for drinks, little gift shop. Some great activities at weekends and during school holidays
Very nice little museum - excellent with kids as it's not too big & has good activities aimed at them.So if you have little people who want to be ninjas or samurai - this is the place to go.
Wonderful displays of oriental artifacts. Very easy place to immerse yourself and still keen to go back for more. Coffee shop could be a lot better
we visited the museum after a morning at the science fair.we enjoyed the museum there is plenty to suit all ages lots of objects from Egypt,China Japan. India, and Asia, and the middle east. There are ancient mummies chinese porcelain Japanese woodblock prints There is plenty of things to keep children amused chinese dressing up and egyptian clothes to try on.There also is jewellery and treasures from Egpytian tombs. Also colouring activies plenty of things to keep occupied .Well worth the visit will back again will bring my husband next time .This museum has some thing for every one .My grand daughter loved the dragon and camel.
Lovely calm atmosphere and the staff went the extra mile. A nice mix of things to see. Kids loved it.
We took my eight year old daughter here for a Saturday afternoon visit, neither of us had never been and I like to try to do fun and educational things with her, plus I have an interest in East Asian history and culture particularly. There was an activity on for families to begin where we built a Himalayas or other mountain landscape scene. All the materials were provided and was included in the very small entrance fee. At the end we got to take them home. Bonus. The actual museum was much bigger than I thought, and not really as "little" as my title suggests. There was an amazing Egyptian collection including two real mummified people, as well as a vast collection of artefacts. There was plenty of other things to see from Chinese, Japanese, Korean and SE Asian culture through to India and the middle east. A small shop sells sandwiches, drinks and snacks if you need them. I definitely recommend this for a family visit and throws in a bit of learning for all along the way!
The Oriental Museum is situated on the Durham University campus and is split over two floors. A modest entrance fee of £1.50 for adults is imo a bargain. The museum has a small cafe and some toilets are situated by the reception desk. The two egyptian rooms are excellent and highlights are two mummies and the statue of the Vizier Paser. A well spent 2 hours. There is a small car park (free) outside which is a godsend as parking restrictions and pay and display are abundant around the Campus and surrounding areas. The Botanical Gardens nearby are a must also on a nice day!
