a wonderful student place to live, great pups and restaurants, you can feel the old town atmosphere and always come back again and again
I really enjoyed walking in here. It is not that different than the old town. But, it is still likeable. It is a bit far from the Neumarkt.
We wandered over here and were pleasantly surprised. Lots of cute little random shops (artsy, rock/stones) and cheaper prices for things like the bakery. It did feel a little alternative ( think college-ages skateboarders with graffiti, etc) but that was my first impression. I still really liked it!
New only in the sense that most of it is 17th century as oppose to 16th.Lots of sights to see on this side of the river - The Golden Rider, The Dresden Romantic museum, the 3 Kings Church and the prettiest dairy in the world (see Guinness Book of Records), to name but a few.The tree shaded Hauptstrasse with it s fountains is a refuge from the glaring heat of the Altstadt in summer, and it has lots of slightly cheaper shopping opportunities, particularly in the covered market.
My wife and I happened to wander into this area looking for a restaurant that was closed, unfortunately. Following friendly directions, we walked on and passed an old Jewish cemetery, surprised that it still existed. Walking on further we suddenly found ourselves on a street filled with restaurants and young people. Many of them were simply sitting out in the street and listening to music from a nearby jazz club. Was this Dresden?! Indeed, it was, but a very different Dresden from the place we all think of. A fun change off of the beaten track, I recommend that visitors take some time to walk off into the Neustadt neighborhood and enjoy the difference.
This area is considered as the heart of night life in Dresden. With modern buildings compared to the altstadt, surrounded by pubs / bars / discotheques, this place attracts tourists in the evening / late night. One cannot miss the fun.
Many fine restaurants and boutique shops, as well as mainstream shops in the Hoch strasse, a splendid broad pedestrian way with plane trees.
I stayed in Neustadt while I was visiting Dresden and loved the vibrancy of this place. There are bars, restaurants and clubs everywhere, but not the touristy kind that charge way too much and all look alike. In Neustadt, each place is unique. There's a jazz bar, a rock bar, a chocolate and cocktail place (yes, two in one) and much more. The walls of the buildings are covered in street art - and not just some tags, but real street ART - and you see all kinds of people walking here. Be sure to walk through the Kunsthofpassage, an inner court and passage way in between the Görlitzer Strasse and the Alaunstrasse with beautifully decorated houses, some small boutiques and a coffee shop.
The Neustadt area of dresden is full of college age people constantly out and about. There are many bars, restaurants and parks that are constantly filled with people. It makes for a great escape from the stoic and touristy Altstadt side of the river. Check it out.
