plane rides are a bit expensive, the restaurant there is small, food took forever to make it to the table.
Want to watch a couple of mini cubs scramble down the airfield? How do these little planes ever get off the ground? Fun to watch as they swing back and forth and then finally make it.
Looking forward to flying in here soon. The runways looked great. A bus stop is within 500' of the tie down area.
We were at the Farm Institute and saw a low flying helicopter. On the way home, stopped at the airfield and there it was! We walked over as others had done, met the Army pilots who welcomed us to get in and look around, and answered operational questions. They were on a training flight and stopped for food and a break.Very interesting visit and quite thrilling to see them take off!
Well worth the short #8 bus ride from Edgartown. Kids of all ages will like the planes. Especially the Biplane. You can book a trip with them for sight seeing. There is a cute restaurant nearby that offers local farm fresh food on there menu. A great place for breakfast of lunch. You can even walk, about 30 min, to South Beach and pack a whole days worth of activities in.
We found this place on TripAdvisor and both the food and service were excellent. We stopped food lunch. The pancakes were great. Watch planes taking off from the windows.
While I cannot address the value of the Airfield for use by pilots, I can say that it is one of the more interesting places for breakfast on the Vineyard. The wait staff are courteous and efficient, and the quality of the food is very good. If you're riding bikes to get from here to there on the Vineyard, Katama Airfield is a fun excursion, perhaps on your way to South Beach.
Take a biplane tour of MV (not cheap!) and have a meal at the Right Fork Diner right there. The Cobb Salad is fantastic.
Good outside seating with a basic pub style menu. Service was good, wish I had opted for something other than scallop plate which was fried and for me, too greasy. The pulled pork sandwich, salads, and cheeseburgers that others in our group had looked very nice. They have a nice selection of beers and wines, and the view, atmosphere on the porch are wonderful. A good place for quick meal with kids.
When planning your bike path, I would definitely advise this air field as a stop. Also the small cafe on the premise is a wonder spot for a quick bite while watching the small aircraft take off and land.
