Straight up the mountain for about a mile. Trail was in good shape and not many hikers. The Tower provides a terrific view of a huge part of the Island. The vegetation and wildlife were not much but a gooday hike anyway.
Sitting in the car just after the walk back down. Hike up isn't crazy but not easy either. I couldn't imagine a better viewing point though. One of those you really just can't capture on film and instead let it sink into your minds eye for later recall. Go!
We didn't know how hard this one would be but decided to give it a try. So glad we did as the views from the top were breathtaking. You have to stop and take some time to really enjoy the scenery. It's beautiful. The hike wasn't bad at all, we slowly realized all the trails we went on were geared for tourists. Paved trails, well marked and whatnot. We didn't get to do The Top of El Yunque or Radio Tower but this one suffices for a great view anyway.
We hiked along a concrete trail through the rainforest. The vegetation is beautiful along with some great views! However, sometimes the area is foggy so the views are not as good, but area is still great to visit. You may see some unique flowers, like wild orchids. We also saw a bioluminescent slug at the top of the tower! This is a must-see in Puerto Rico!
We had bad luck with the view - the people leaving as we arrived told us it was great but unfortunately the clouds had just blown over. We waited for 15 minutes or so, but no luck. However, the hike up through the forest was still pretty and we enjoyed it. The tower has an interesting look with orange moss growing all over it. The hike up from the road is not bad - somewhat steep in spots but paved the entire way and beautiful. When you hit the gravel road, follow it up a little further to the fork, and go right another quarter mile or so to reach the tower.
switch backs make it less steep but it still quite a climb. very good trail of cement with rocks,so it doesn't get too slippery. lovely gurgling streams, along the, way. great hike with nice views from the tower. when you reach the road near the top, go a little way and then turn right onto path marked "wildlife viewing" ( it doesn't mention tower). As with other trails in el Yunque ,go early and you might have it all,to yourself!
Mt Britton Trail - parking available in designated area. This trail will lead you to the Mt Britton Observatory tower. The trail is medium to high difficultly level. It will take 30 mins up to the tower and the whole trail is uphill. Coming down will take around 20-25 mins. Though it is a strenuous hike, the view from the tower is worth it. There is another trail to El Yunque peak from Mt Britton tower(we skipped it)) which could take one hour one side from Mt. Britton tower.
This is a heck of a hike as it is mostly up hill. Beautiful scenery in the rainforest to get to this tower make it a good hike. We could not see much as there were clouds all around us but that was kind of cool as well.
It was a nice trail with waterfalls and there was a great view from the top of the tower. It was beautiful and worth the hike!
The Mt. Britton lookout tower, on a small peak, is a great hike. 45 minutes up, less down. 3, 088 ft. high. It is a wonderful overlook of the El Yunque Rain Forest, on a clear day you can see forever! On a cloudy day, with a little wind, the clouds are swirling around you. Great experience, well worth the hike up. There are 3 covered rest stations on the way up.You walk through the Sierra Palm forest as you climb. The path itself is paved, perhaps narrow but well maintained. If you wished to continue up to the top of El Yunque the path continues from here ( about another hour up).
