Statues, manuscripts (large enough to examine), paintings, tapestries, metalwork in a comfortable setting. Little known work that should be well known. In a former church and cloister.
I was the only visitor which was a shame as the shady cloisters made a lovely place to relax and the museum had some fascinating artifacts. High point for me were the wonderful Medieval stone carvings by The Master of the Months. These had once adorned the Cathedral and were stunning in the sensitivity of their observation and the quality of the work. A real find for me as I'm a sculptor myself and appreciate the skill involved. They're amazingly well preserved too which is a bonus.I also enjoyed the beautiful illuminated books. Well worth a visit.
This is a small Museo located across the the church where you fi d medieval and renaissance belongings of the church. The room of tapestries took my breath away......again as I have found in this wonderful town you can get right up close and examine closely the detail of each stitch.....I rate it as better than the ones in the vatican museum.
The museum is hosted in a ancient but partially rebuilt palace in the very cicty centre. Entering the building, you will find a small but very beautiful cloister. The collections are visible in two different areas of the bulding, the first one is basically some stone sculpures and music books dating back to the XVth century. The second part is hosted in a former church and is much more interesting, especially the stunning statue of the 'Madonna of the Pommegranate' and the large tapestries.
Museo della Cattedrale is housed in the former Church of San Romano, at the start of via San Romano. It used to be housed in the Duomo itself. It's a small collection, but there is truly some amazing artwork in this gallery:L'annunciazione by Cosme' TuraSt George and Dragon by Cosme' TuraMadonna con Bambino Jacopo della Quercia
This museum is a good place to go when you have an odd hour in the historical centre and has several good early Renaissance works. One that stands out for me is the Maddonna Della Melagrana by Jacopo Della Quercia.
I went in expecting chalices etc but was pleasantly surpised. They had beautiful 13th century carvings from the wallsof the cathedral , showing the seasons, Huge illuminated Psalm books from 12th century, and a stunning Madonna and child by Jacobo della Quercia, which looked as perfect as anything could be. This small museum was the best of a number of places worth visitingt in Ferrara
Good contents with some exceptional pieces of sculpture. Not too big to wear you out. Fantastic toilets!!!
Beautiful, little-known objects ranging from gigantic tapestries to exquisite small sculptures, large illuminated manuscripts, big statues, impressive paintings..... and it's not so big that it will tire you out.
Beautiful small collection of tapestries paintings sculpture and amazing collection of cathedral music books
