This little gem has a Winslow Homer! along with Fitz Henry Lane's and other gorgeous local painters, it is absolutely worth a visit or even two.
Recently renovated in to a small, world class museum. They have one of the largest collections of Fitz Henry Lane paintings in the world.
When I have out of town visitors I always bring them to the Cape Ann Museum and it never disappoints. It is being renovated right now but will reopen this summer. It has some history and culture of Cape Ann so you do not have to be an art lover to enjoy it.Within walking distance of the museum is Main Street which has great restaurants and shops. It is 2 blocks from the waterfront and beautiful parks.
We visited the museum and took the docent's tour which was very informative. I was surprised, however, that she didn't even mention the 3 Winslow Homer's and the Edward Hopper! Learned quite a bit about the various artists of the Cape Ann area of which there were many. I was especially interested in the Folly Cove Designers beautiful textiles. There were also artifacts such as a Fresnel lens that was used in one of the two Thatcher Island lighthouses. The museum has just had a major renovation and was well-laid out with many period pieces of furniture as part of the exhibits. I f you are at all interested in maritime history, this museum is a must.
Beautiful recently renovated spaces. Excellent special and permanent exhibits. Friendly and helpful staff. Very nice small performance auditorium. Well worth the visit.
New expansion is spectacular. Loved the history of Cape Ann that is carefully captured. A must see when visiting Cape Ann.
We've sailed the waters surrounding Cape Ann for many years, heard the stories and read about the heroes. The Cape Ann Museum puts it all together beautifully, capturing the light, ingenuity, and determination of visitors and natives alike. We visited just in time for a docent tour and it was just perfect. The emphasis was on the well known local artists, but we also got a lot of history, maritime and cultural...The galleries are beautifully designed and natural light abounds. It's well worth a visit and the gift shop doesn't disappoint.
It's a well laid out museum that has exhibits to appeal to adults and some activities for children as well.
This museum is a little gem. I call it the museum for people who aren't crazy about museum visits. Not just paintings, although they are wonderful, but furniture and artifacts that give a really good idea of Gloucester and its history. Not to be missed, and not expensive.
Amazed! Everyone who loves museums should visit this one! Not only are the Fritz Henry Lane works impressive but so many other works in the museum are note worthy. If possible, take the guided tour! Our tour guide was wonderful and we would have missed a lot of the explanations on set up and design and details of other artist if we missed the tour. The tour included the Davis House, which complimented the newly beautifully renovated museum. Must see this museum for yourself, to fully appreciate its essence. A small well displayed gift shop is available.
