We loved it so much we got married here ! The staff was super nice. They are always changing the displays so it is always a great place to visit.
I always enjoy visiting this museum. In addition to the permanent displays that tell the local history, there are always new displays where I learn something new. And no trip is complete without climbing the tower to take in the gorgeous 360* view of Grand Junction
This is one of the best small town museums I've been in. Great exhibits, thoughtfully laid out, in-depth information, I could go on. With each exhibit I looked at, I became more impressed with solid academic feel to the information and history, as if it were carefully researched. The exhibits were also very cool just to look at. Great place!
Wonderful couple, brilliant and fun guide! Wife is from my city, Amarillo. We had something in common! Smile! Brilliant historian, with wonderful and authentic exhibits. We appreciated his masterpieces and expertise. I would return many times again. Great price for an adventure into the old west! You never know where you are going, until you know where you came from! The exhibits are well done, a life size stage coach, a mock miner's tunnel, vintage school room, wild west bar and more. History of the area, mining, baseball, and special exhibits make it very interesting. The kids will enjoy it!
Just two blocks south of Main Street the Museum of the West is a nice small museum. Check out the view of the city from the tower from the top of the building. There are a number of exhibits from western Colorado life. The kids loved the hands on exhibits. The guys loved the gun display. Good for about an hour max. Clean area....cordial and knowledgable staff.
Well worth the effort. Nicely laid out with many different eras. Beware of the tower though; it is very high and has small catwalks. It can be intimidating for people with problems being in high places.
I do not know about the museum itself but upstairs in the museum research library we met three of the most knowledgeable and helpful staff. Three men (one named Gary Brewer I believe) eagerly answered every question and gave us photos to look at, books, histories to copy etc. They went over and beyond to help us find locations and former buildings and schools. Very impressed with their knowledge and hospitality towards us.
This was a small museum with a lot of stuff packed in. We especially liked the Spanish exhibit, as well as the stagecoach. The docent was very nice and knowledgeable, the exhibits were first-class, and the gift shop well-stocked.
I was skeptical when I first read about this place, it seemed a little bit stuffy, but our family visited this museum while we vacationed in Mesa, Colorado and we really enjoyed it. We have six children age 4 - 14 and there was something here for each of them. There were interesting things to see and read and unique history to explore (as well as an extensive display of guns which fascinated my older boys) but there were also a lot of things to touch and climb on which kept my younger kids engaged as well. We especially loved the old west carriage we could all climb into (and then push a button to activate sounds and make it seem like we were really taking a ride), the ride in airplane which instructed its driver to push buttons and switches in a certain order to start the plane, and an old fashioned computer which we used to help solve a controversial Colorado murder mystery (that's the fun of the display). There is a mine to walk through, an old school room to draw on chalk board or personal slate boards, an antique telephone booth where you can listen to operators and lots more. There is also a tower you can head to the top of (stairs or elevator) and get a great view of the whole valley. It was a fun museum.
