The church looks very old and in good condition. But there is not much to recommend it inside. They were setting up long tables with tablecloths that filled the church. Disappointing.
Attended the December 24, 2300 service. Most moving and a wonderful way to celebrate the Season. Beautiful chore and accomplished orchestra
The Church is nice but, to my opinion, the strongest interest lies in its location, because some fifty meters beyond it one enjoys a magnificent view of the castle from below. In addition, it is close to the old bridge which is quite spectacular
While walking through the Old Town, we found this lovely gothic church. It is very typical for its era and has wonderful stained glass. It was quite serene in the mid-afternoon light. There is access to a tower for a small fee, but we did not do this, but perhaps the next visit over we will.
Heiliggeistkirche is a beauty, inside and out. I found it much more to my taste than the Jesuitenkirche, for example. It is placed in a large, inviting square, and is a beauty from every angle on the outside. I also found the interior lovely as well. While it may not be packed with medieval treasures it is a brighter space than I had expected, and it does house the tomb of Rupert III (ruled from 1398-1410) and his queen Elizabeth, very well crafted. It is also a welcome respite from the rest of the somewhat crowded pedestrian zone - a place to take a breather while planning your next foray into Heidelberg. I recommend it!
walk up the tower to the outside and get great views of the town, river and castle. We were lucky and musicians were playing which from above was inspiring.
The church is, by all accounts, very dark and Gothic looking from the outside. Once inside, the light shining through the stained glass windows is beautiful. I sat in the church for almost an hour just admiring the windows. I sat for another 30 minutes praying and meditating. There was a prayer wall for people to write prayers offered up to God and them post them for others to pray for them as well.
I loved the pink sandstone building with its hight arches. It's right int he centre of the old town and well worth a visit.
The Heiliggeistkirche was built over a forty year period from 1400 on the site of an earlier Romanesque basilica. Being the oldest building in Heidelberg we strolled inside and thoroughly enjoyed the simple interior and photographic displays. The few euros admission to ascend the tower is well worth while and rewards visitors with great views of the town and surrounds.
