Must see in Hereford. there is nothing like it elsewhere. The chained library is also well worth a visit.
Really interesting and informative., well presented and along with the old library, though provoking. Really liked this.
Liked the whole 'chained vibe' and the reverence the place is duly given. We kind of wondered into this, but glad we did. Learnt a lot and now appreciate non chained libraries.
The Mappa Mundi is a unique and fascinating document and well worth a special visit to see. However we were also very impressed with the supporting exhibition, which describes the context in a thoughtful and accessible way.
I thought it was expensive to get in, and it's quite dark in there and if it's full of people it's difficult to see. You need to know the back ground of the map which is quite small, and the history of the very old books cos otherwise it's just a smelly collection of tatty books!!
When you visit, make sure to spend lots of time viewing the supporting exhibition before you see the real thing - it will mean so much more. For obvious reasons, the light in the map room is kept quite low, but if you have spent time in the exhibition you will be able to read the map so much more easily. An ancient, fascinating and informative map which shows the world as it was interpreted back then. The chained library is great for anyone who enjoys books. Amazing to see these old volumes chained together in their original shelving. The volunteer guides are extremely helpful and informative.
Fantastic. The whole story of how it was found, what each little figure means is amazing. The chained library is a masterpiece. The docents are happy to answer any question you have plus give you some great side stories. This is worth a visit again and again. Please see this wonder.
To often we travel abroad and visit other countries and their cultures but often take for granted what is on our own door.
This is a fantastic piece of history to visit with all ages as well as absorbing the history of the Cathedral.
I live locally but have only seen it once it's worth seeing if you find maps/ history interesting I thought it was expensive for what I was but you do get to see the chained library as well.
