For me, this was the most moving memorial this visit. While explaining the significance to my kids we came upon an older gentleman who served in the war that was visiting the memorial for the first time. Seeing his reaction to the memorial put it all into perspective for my children and my husband and I. Very beautifully done.
My Stepfather dreamed of seeing this monument. The veterans administration has programs for the veterans but they cannot transport my mother with him. Ed Perlmutter's office helped me plan his special visit. Their office had limitations but provided me with information I could use. This special place was a memory that our family will never forget. A National Parks ranger, Creama Krop, came up to him and asked him to tell some stories of WWII. After listening she announced to the crowd, We have a WWII veteran in our presence, let's honor him and thank him as the crowd clapped she gave a special salute. Tears in our families eyes and memories.
Atlantic to pacific and all the states in between depicted in stone. You can find your ancestor if they were registered as being in ww2.Rangers there to help.
The memorial is a remarkable mark of respect. It also bought sadness to see families grieve there. I liked the peaceful atmosphere and the fact that the names of individuals are displayed.
this is on the mall and it is very well done, it represents all of the fronts and list all of the soldiers by state; it is a nice tribute to the veterans of WWII.
The WW2 memorial didn't open till only a few years ago and why it took so long to show respect to those who served not sure. If you are walking from the Washington monument down to see the Lincoln this will be your first stop and worth the time. Spend at least 30-60 minutes walking around the water, state names, etc. This was one of the greatest generations that gave their lives to allow us to live everyday free, they deserve your respect.
