My husband and I visited the Crannog Centre on Sunday 12th October. It was a lovely day to visit - bright and sunny - which made the loch and surrounding area look beautiful. We thoroughly enjoyed the whole tour. The tour starts in the exhibition room which is very informative for adults but still has some artefacts that may appeal to children. There are also garments that the children can dress up in. The crannog itself is very interesting and our guide Dirk was informative and was happy to answer any questions that we had. Back on land Dirk showed us how to make fire and keep in going using a bracken mushroom, equipment that the dwellers would have used to work wood and stone and then gave us the opportunity to try for ourselves. Great fun was had by all. There was also a fruit and fungi event on so we had the opportunity to press apples, find out about different berries and mushrooms the crannog dwellers would have found and to try some preserves made from the harvest. A good day out for all ages.
There wasn't a movement or sound whilst the guide took us back in time to the Iron Age. It was unbelievable to realise that people lived on Loch Tay in such dwellings so long ago.The guide was able to answer every question put to her.Pricey, but well worth the experience.
We went in February as it is an interesting topic .. only to find it closed for the winter. hopefully it will be open if we are back later in the year.
What a good morning out. The guide was excellent and very knowledgible. His demonstrations of old ways of woodworking and making fire really made it enjoyable for the children who were there.
This is stepping into the past and reliving history when you visit the Crannog Centre.Hands on demonstrations of woodwoking with working tools as they would have been used all those years ago. We also made fire by rubbing sticks. The crannog is fascinating and well reconstructed. It shows how a crannog would have been made using origional tools and materials.Everything was really well demonstrated and past lifestyle explained. An excellent experience.
Friends took me here and it was well worth the drive. I knew nothing about Crannogs so learned a lot. The reconstructed Crannog was fascinating and all the staff and guides helpful and pleasant. I especially liked the way the guides interacted with the children in the craft demonstrations. They seemed to really enjoy engaging them in participating and thinking about what they were seeing.
The Crannog Centre Staff were very knowledgeable and answered questions on any level! The reconstruction was based on sound archaeological knowledge and really brought ancient history to life. There was plenty of room in the actual dwelling with comfortable seating for everyone and the commentary was concise and well-organised, catering to all levels of knowledge. All the staff were dressed in appropriate costumes for the time the crannog was originally built ! The gift shop had a really well well-chosen range of items - I could easily have spent a fortune !! All in all a marvellous experience !!
We almost didn`t go to the Scottish Crannog Centre, as we had actually passed by the day before on our way elsewhere. We were really happy we decided to double back. The interpretive centre was well done, with lots of information on how these iron-age houses were built, how the research was done and how they rebuilt the crannog. Videos of the process were particularly useful. Our costumed guide was knowledgeable and interesting. I particularly enjoyed the demonstrations on tools used in the iron age. It was great to be able to use them too. Now I know how to start a fire with two sticks of wood!
The guide was very knowledgeable and was happy to share his experience of working at the Crannog. He has inspired us to read more about these an ient dwellings and the nature and culture of our ancestors who lived and worked in and aroundthe Crannog.
Such a worthwhile, fascinating trip to this museum. Loved the hands on nature of the centre, making everything real. Beautiful location and excellent staff. A must!!!!
