We though this ski museum, situated next to the famous winter ski centre in Lahti, would be a normal museum. Instead of (or maybe more like: in addition to) we found a collection of winter ski sports simulators and ended up spending a fun few hours in this "museum". We tried the ski jump, biathlon and cross country skiiing simulators. The museum hosts were kindly showing us all the time how to use the simulators. A great place especially for families with kinds and fun to get to try the winter ski sports in the middle of August.
Museum has three parts - overall history of skiing in Finland, second part is dedicated to champions in Ski Jumps and third part - you could play as a kid in activities like trying to jump in simulator, downhill skiing or try to biatlon race. There is small cafeteria with drinks and sandwiches and museum shop. Unfortunatelly we havent opportunity to go to observation teracce in the jumping hill because of our small group of people (at least they said 10 persons). Real jumping hills are so different than in TV. Surprise: Below the largest Jumping hill is a swimming pool (in summer).
This is one of the best attraction in Lahti situated in "Kisakeskus" of Salpausselkä where FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2017 will be organised. Museum is small but full of Finnish skiing history and different activities. Suitable especially for adults (men especially) and kids. Museum can be easily reached by own car and parking lots availability is very good. Or just take to nice walk from the city centre to Salpausselkä.
The Lahti Ski Museum is a relatively small museum (easily seen in less than an hour). The first part of the museum covers the history of skiing in Finland, mainly as it relates to cross-country skiing and ski jumping but also touches on the role of skiing during the Winter War. Since the first part can be tedious for kids, the second part of the museum includes interactive games, including a ski jumping simulator and a biathlon shooting range. Upstairs there are also some special exhibits. The museum also includes a souvenir shop which has some quality items but at a premium price. Just outside the museum there is also a restaurant and cafe.Any visit to the museum should really be combined with a visit to the Lahti Sports Center, meaning a ride to the top of the large ski jump tower. The museum sells combined tickets to both the ski jump tower and the museum. The ski lift and ski jump tower may be closed to the public during the winter months.
If you visit Lahti and like the winter sports, this is the place to go to feel the part of Finnish winter sport history. And yes, it's always so fun to play around with a ski jumping simulator and other activities.
Ancient skis and fascinating history. Splendid gift shop.
This museum is small, and hidden. It's address seems be large concrete building where are offices and seats on games. Actually is smaller building that have same street number (8) and wooden wall, after you see it you know you are right place after the bridge. Winter time beware ski route, and go under the bridge, not up over ski route because there is high speedskiers. What museum is all about it's skies and Lahti winter games. Museum has some video games, like ski jump simulator, even you are champion on game that won't mean you should next try it real on real jump towers on area. Summer time biggest jump tower has open as observation tower. There is elevator to up. Currently this is only observation tower at Lahti because Mustakallio water tower aren't anymore open for public.
