Ardastra Gardens is best know for its flamingo march when the flamingos troop down en masse to be viewed by the visitors. You actually can wander among the flamingos anytime during your visit. They are used to the tourists gawking and don't seem to mind. Beyond the flamingos there are a number of parrots and other exotic birds along with small primates and a few other mammals native to tropical climates. Visitors stroll along a landscaped path among the fairly large cages housing the animal exhibits. Some of the parrots are not caged but will keep their distance. Don't expect excitement, but the facility is pretty well maintained, the staff is friendly and it is a very pleasant way of spending a few hours.
The zoo was small, but had enough animals to keep visitors interested and the flamingos were totally cool!
Ardastra Gardens and Zoo is somewhere to go and spend a few hours. I wouldn't go there expecting The Bronx Zoo, but it was enjoyable. We were able to see some unique animals such as Meerkats and white peacocks. They had two main attractions, the Flamingo March, where you watch a group of Flamingos march around in a circle (it was cool). Also, you are able to get right up close to the flamingos. While they don't want you to touch them, I was close enough that I could have. The second attraction was feeding of the birds. They have a large outdoor cage filled with birds and they hand you an apple slice. It would have been better if there were fewer people. It was a little overcrowded the day we went, so it made it difficult to feed a bird. Some other main attractions were closed (jaguars) and I am not really sure why. They do have many animals that I have seen before at local small zoos, such as Macaws, monkeys, snakes, etc. Though I wasn't overly impressed, it was something nice to do with our daughter.
Really enjoyed the flamingo show, mostly because the narrator was very good. Many areas of zoo had empty areas. It was very run down. Enjoyed holding the big bird, and feeding the little ones. The peacocks were beautiful.
We were actually here in June, 2013, but that wasn't an option on the drop down. This was one of the stops our tour bus made while in Nassau as part of our Bahamas cruise. I'm glad we chose this tour. We enjoyed the flamingo show, feeding the birds and just walking around on a beautiful sunny day. I love to take pictures and this was an ideal place to have a camera. We were surrounded by natural beauty. Exotic birds walked with us on the paths. Colorful flowers were everywhere. All I can say is WOW! If you are in Nassau and want to refresh your soul & spirit, find some time to visit Adastra Gardens & Zoo.
So the cruise companies offer an expensive tour that includes the Ardastra gardens. If you don't want all the other extras of the tour and would rather just do the gardens and tour the city on your own, then take the bus.The gardens themselves were very pretty and not very large where there is a ton of walking. They have a lot of interesting animals and birds you can't see a lot of other places. We found it funny the North American Raccoon was on display. We see those way too often at home. The Marching Flamingos were a highlight. They do a short show and you can walk among the flamingos before/after in their own area.
We took our 17 month old here in February and we had a blast!! You can walk from the cruise port, even though the info booth people will look at you like you are crazy for wanting to do so. It's probably about 2-3 miles tops. We took a cab and the cost for round trip was $24. That was a bit much, but we know for next time. The cost was reasonable $16 per adult (get the coupon from the map @ info desk). The animals were great! Up close and they looked happy and very well cared for! The place was kept up although the pathways were a little rough in some spots with a stroller. Overall, I would go back in a heartbeat! I'm suggesting this to anyone who wants a good afternoon option with kids.
