You have to use your imagination on the inside cos the modernists have stolen its very essence. Still lots of the ancient Cathedral to admire but to me it's soul been lost
It is amazing how this building has been restored after being bombed by the RAF on 16 June 1944. On first entering you do feel that the building is of its period, however the stain glass windows are a give away being very modernistic, although there are a number of original religious buildings with modern stain glass. It is not until halfway round the cathedral that you are provided with a description of what happened in June 1944 and the pictures of the devastation caused. It is a remarkable achievement to have restored this building in such away. It would have been easier to have demolished it and built a modern cathedral but seeing as it was rebuilt in 1965 you can only wonder at the result of this option, a concrete bunker probably. The reason it was bombed by the RAF? They mistook it for the railway station!!!!
The juxtaposition of gothic and roman architecture with modern stained glass is truly a sight to behold at this Cathedral in Nevers. Never have I seen such brightly colored (almost neon) stained glass! There are hundreds of Cathedrals through out Europe and most of them are beautiful, but Cathedrale Saint-Cyr-et-Sainte-Julitte is truly special! Even my children, ages 5 and 7, were entranced.
The Cathedral had o be rebuilt after the wat after it was destroyed by RAF bombers attacking the earby railway. The building was restored in the gothic style and is quite impressive. However to me the highlight is the amazing display of contemporary stained glass that has been recently completed. I articularly admired the way that the windows above the choir flooded the area with both light and colour in a way that the medieval glaziers could not achieve and their successors until the mid 20th century did not atempt. If you are interested in the art of glass it is worth travelling to visit and even if you are not it is wotth visiting if you are in the area.
This cathedral offers a great expemple ofboth roman and gothic architecture. Destroyed during the war, the original stainglasses are now replaced by more contemporary ones. A superb combination. The bright colours of the stainglasses projecting a very special halo inside.
