Ethereal beauty steeped in history. The live oaks, Spanish moss, and beautiful statuary make this a must see for everyone's visit to Savannah!
I can't believe I'm actually writing about a cemetery. But it really is worth seeing. It's like seeing slices of life through the years--and history through the eyes of monuments. It's not that there's so many well known people buried there but that people seemed really intent on erecting monuments with personality. The setting is gorgeous on the water and you can drive through most of it and still have a good experience.
If you are like me and enjoy exploring cemeteries than do not miss this one. Easy to spend a few hours walking and exploring.
This is a well-maintained property that run tours and even has porta-johns, benches and wastebins onsite for the tourists. Rather than being a bad thing that detracts from the beautiful live oak lined rows, this makes visiting this historic landmark pleasant and clean. I didn't take a paid tour, but the snippets I overheard from the ones being conducted while I was wandering about seemed to be professional and well-informed.
You have to see this place. Even if visiting a cemetery is not high on your list of places to see, you should check this one out. It is just too beautiful! I know that sounds creepy but it is difficult to describe. Stop at the office and get a map and guide/brochure. You can drive through this one and stop where you want. We were there on a drizzly/overcast day and that just added to the beautiful creepiness. Check out the kiosk on the front porch of the office building. You can search for you family names to see if you have some relative buried there.
This opens early for walkers and tourist to walk through. You'll hear this on a tour but if you don't. The soldiers stayed in the cemetery during the war and out of boredom they removed headstones to other graves or changed details on the headstones. The ones on the brick wall are the most interesting.
