Quick way to see a little more of Skagway. Takes less than an hour. Great views of your cruise ship. Anybody can do this hike.
just a quick hike to the outskirts of town where you can "workout" along the way as there are old workout stations set up. once out to the point it is very peaceful and quiet
Lovely walk, close to town, great for pictures, peaceful, always a few others on the trail. A easy to find your way.... Take a book or a picnic, enjoy!
Nice way to brush off the cruise cobwebs. Gentle stroll through town and then over a bridge and into the woods. You can walk a little further to smugglers cove. Again very scenic but bring bug spray.
Nice short walk out of town to the point. Great vistas of nearby mountains and glaciers. Saw and heard whales from the point.
There were whales off the point when I hiked the very easy trail...and a seal playing by the lobster pots. Cross the bridge, turn left and walk for 20 minutes and you will be there. It is gorgeous.
Yakutania Point gives a neat view of the western end of Skagway and the shoreline both directions from the town. You walk north on 1st Ave, past the western end of the airport runway, cross the Skagway River bridge, and see the signs showing the trail west to Yakutania Point. Most hikers will do the trail in ten minutes or so to the point. Pretty civilized, with a toilet part way along the trail. You have easy steps over a few bumps getting to the rocky outlook, so be careful over the uneven surfaces. The mountain tops are often covered by clouds, but otherwise the views are nice. Return to town over the same path, or consider the other routes the signs suggest for more objectives. This is the easiest hike other than the town walk if you want nature instead of gift shops! Good for kids, with supervision in the rough spots.
It was a about 5 mins by car from the high street of Skagway. We started walking from the airport lounge...walked about 10 mins and reached the point ...can see the ocean - has a little beach area - looked like people bbq there...didn't see any wildlife..was very sunny when we were there...also encountered flies...so left after 10 mins..
This was an easy walk. The trail is wide and well maintained up to the point where you can walk out to the actual rocky point. The view was lovely, although the mosquitoes were a bit annoying.
This made for a great leg-stretcher after morning on the train ride, followed by lunch on the ship. The entire hike is about 2.5 miles, with little elevation gain (a little over 110 feet) My husband Jerry and I thoroughly enjoyed the hike first to Smuggler's Cove, and then to l Yakutania Point. We enjoyed the hike for two reasons: because it is a fun hike on a neat trail with great views in places, and because we found several geo-caches. In fact, without geocaching, we would not have known about this trail. We walked from the ship along the paved trail, and found our way to the bridge over the river. There are nice interpretive signs here. It was very neat to stroll across the bridge, looking at the scenery and flowers all around us.We turned left and followed the wide unpaved trail along the river in the forest. Along this stretch is where we saw the most people, often with children and dogs. The trees, the rocks, and the views were very interesting and pretty. For the time being, we did not take the short side trail to Yakutania Point. We continued on the trail to Smuggler's Cove. The intersection is signed. The trail towards Smuggler's Cove becomes more narrow, and in many ways even more interesting. It is well built in places where trail-building was needed, and well marked. There are some ups and downs, some of them on stone steps. You could take small children on this and be comfortable. It is not wheelchair accessible after Yakutania Point. We found all sorts of things to look at as we walked along. This is the sort of trail where an out and back is desirable, in fact.We got to Smuggler's Cove and saw one couple. They were just leaving, so we had this beautiful area to ourselves. There is a picnic table, a shelter, grate, and even a w/c. We discovered to our interest something we had not noticed on the map at the start of the trail: the cove is reachable by road. We preferred the hike though. We made our way back to Yakutania Point with all of its beautiful views and great rocks to explore. This made a great place to relax and look at the beauty all around us. We also had a great view of water, ships, and mountains. There were quite a few people here, but that was not a problem. On the way back to the ship, we met and talked with a couple of young men who live and work in Skagway during the summer season. It was interesting to hear more about the area.As we neared the pier, we found one last cache, and then admired what we could see. The sound of the creek was pleasant. It had been a wonderful day, with perfect weather.
