27 holes of well manicured fairways and greens that can be played from a variety of tees. There is a significant amount of water and ample bunkers. The clubhouse is spectacular with a British influence. There are only a few homes on the course which makes for a more natural setting. The change in ownership in the past 18 months made it affordable for all. This is a golf experience no to be missed.
Excellent golf course. Unfortunately very wet due to recent rain, but all in all a course I would come back and play. Played McKay and Cameron. Parred the toughest hole #7!
Played Thistle on a recent trip to Myrtle Beach. We had a couple of groups. The golf course was in really good shape. The greens were nice and rolled true. This is a beautiful facility. The course is well worth playing. The pro shop folks were friendly. Personally do not like the way the bag drop area was being run. They have 3 9s and were quite busy on the Saturday morning we were there. They would not load our clubs until we were almost late for our scheduled tee time. This leaves you with a feeling of being rushed so you can actually make it to the tee by your scheduled start time. After the round, we went into the grill to have lunch. We (7 of us) sat down at a table and quickly came to realize that if we wanted service, we would need to go up to the bar and order. First 2 items I picked off the menu I was told "we are out of that". My next question was "tell me what else you are out of and I will decide what I want". I pretty sure my comment was no well received. Geez, it is a Saturday and the weekend before one of the largest tournaments in the Myrtle Beach area (consuming 76 different golf courses) and they have not prepared for the crowd they were going to get that day....bad management/decisions maybe. Again, great golf course. Maybe just consider eating and drinking afterwards somewhere else.My rating is based solely on the golf itself.
I believe this is the nicest kept course within a 10 mile radius. The fairways are generous. Very picturesque. First class facilities and help. Greens are true and relatively fast. Cement cart paths.
The employees were arogant, rude , unprofessional, and lied...we booked the round and I went in their clubhouse the day before we were to play and was assured our rate was $29.00 per player when we showed up they wanted to charge us $85. Then they said $49 and we should be glad to get on such a nice course and people are happy to pay $85 to have this experience. After n half hour we got on for $29.00....the course is nondescript, plain jane, and just ok....my $8 hot dog was served on stale bun and the condiment table was covered with gnats.....stick your happy to pay $85 where the sun doesn't shine
We stopped at this course on the way back from another in the area to see if we could get in another nine before it got dark.We got a nice twilight rate and the starter got us out without a problem. The course was in nice shape and had some interesting holes. Definitely not an easy course, but one that I would play again.
Played Thistle the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. After 3 solid days of rain the course was as expected very wet but still playable. The new greens on the Cameron 9 holes were outstanding. They still had plenty of speed and rolled true despite the rains. Played the Mackay 9 as well and the greens in that 9 were slower as they still had a older Bermuda that had been over seeded. Those greens are supposed to get redone in 2015. Overall a very solid golf course with some excellent holes. The bunkering on the Cameron 9 frame the holes very well and offer a good test. Will Definitely play here again especially after all the greens have been redone. The only reason I didn't rate it a 5 star was the difference in the greens.
The course is definitely not boring, a lot of interesting holes, but definitely not easy for the average golfer. Even though it is a semi links course If your ball ventures off the fairway there are a lot of places where you will lose it.A write up I read touted the great number of Scotches served at the bar of this Scottish style course. I thought I'd finish off the day with a fine single malt, but found they only had two choices and no single malts. The barmaid said since the new ownership they have all been cleared out. Hrrumpf
This course has beautiful scenery, and the fairways and greens were in excellent condition the day we played. There are plenty of challenges with lots of marsh areas, water, and bunkers. The Scottish-themed clubhouse is eye-catching. I will fault them for not having hole diagrams on the scorecards, and not even a diagram posted by each tee box. They must want to sell their course layout booklets. Also, the staff around the carts were neither very friendly nor helpful.
While visiting a friend in the Sunset Beach area, we decided to go play Thistle. What a wonderful experience from start to finish! We were immediately greeted in the pro shop by Sue from Baltimore. She was professional and very knowledgable about how to play the course…offered good tips for a few of the more difficult holes. Once out on the course, it was in as great of shape as we had heard it was from tee box to greens. We'll definitely be back!
