Sadly we chose the one day of the week that it rained we were in Norfolk to visit the reserve, they are well geared to children but not me who has no interest in twitching. I sat on the café and it was cold and not very inviting, food ok but nothing special, the rest of the family want to go back in good weather and I am sure they will enjoy it
I visited titchwell on New year's day in order to start off my birdwatching year on a high. Despite the weather being cold and grim the place was still wonderfully packed with nature including marsh harriers and avocets showing off in full view of the many telescopes. Apart from the obvious natural spectacle the reserve boast a great shop stacked with products and a wonderful cafe which is a godsend on any day but especially a cold one with its selection of cakes, sandwiches and hot food and drinks. Add to this the friendly and knowledgeable staff it's a great place.
This RSPB reserve is a must visit! We always make sure we visit whenever we are staying in Norfolk. The entrance to the reserve has a large car park with clean toilet facilities. RSPB members can park and enter the reserve at no extra cost. The visitors centre is large and the shop well stocked. The volunteers are as helpful as always. The reserve offers scenic views and fantastic birds. There is a 1km walk to a sandy beach. The café is a real gem, with excellent service, delicious food and super cheap prices!
This is an outstanding RSPB reserve which can be relied on for good birding at any time of year. It is also good to see the adaptions to the flood defences progressing well.
The wind was bitter but the warm welcome to Titchwell Marshes more than made up for it. We used to be members of the RSPB but gave it up when it seemed that as long as we paid our dues to the Society no one cared much if we saw any birds or not. It is a pity that everyone working for RSPB doesn't have the ability to recognise that we want to see birds - and if they are unusual so much the better. Well, we saw birds, hundreds of them, rare and not so rare, noisy ones, shy and quiet ones, dull ones and colourful ones and much of the enjoyment is due to the volunteers, happy, interesting people all. Our sincere thanks. Lunch was substantial - the bacon bap 'nailed me to the floor 'as mother used to say, and it was served with a smile and good humour. The paths are well defined and the feathered visitors numerous, as indeed were the unfeathered ones. Probably not a place for under 5's unless they have been used to sitting quietly from babyhood. The birds vary with the time of year, obviously, and there's no guarantee that you'll see a Marsh Harrier - we did, WOW.
This is a great RSPB Reserve, with a special atmosphere featuring marshes and the beach. Fabulous winter geese - magical skeins of pink feet flying over calling at dusk. Many species of duck and waders, and a skulking water rail! Great views from hides. Worth a visit at any time of year.
On my first visit I was surprised how beautiful the reserve was, with woods, lakes of fresh and sea water,a low observation building and a walk out to the beach along a sea bank with a vast panorama of marsh and sky and only the cries of different bird species to be heard. it was great to see so many people happily enjoying the lovely fresh air whilst following their interest in bird watching. There were welcome places to sit and reflect on the scene if needed
We had beautiful sunny weather on our visit and it makes all the difference. Blue skies meant that it was almost possible to forget the arctic winds howling down onto the North Norfolk coast. Lovely people and a nice sandwich in the cafe for lunch.
We only visited the beach as have no interest in birds really. However the cafe is good for a quick cuppa
Free parking for RSPB members, £5 for others, but free to get into reserve. Excellent viewing hides. Bird life was fabulous, pink footed and Brent geese, many duck species and waders. Beautiful area as well. Also worth a visit to the nearby Snettisham reserve. Book a place on the Pinkfooted geese event, early start but worth it and full cooked breakfast included.Arrived a bit late so did not see all of the reserve, so get there early.
