Great camping, great fishing, a couple of really nice hikes and one of them goes around the lake. Hills Creek is a breath of fresh air every time I come. They have a beach, concession stand, many camping options, everything the outdoorsman could want! I live here locally and still come to camp just to get away.
we needed a place to recharge our batteries. Perfect park to enjoy creation and unwind in a comfortable cabin. Went in June but next time would love to go in October to enjoy the fall foliage.
My family and I have been going to Hills Creek State Park for many years. We like to kayak and fish on the nice-sized lake. The park does offer seasonal kayak rentals, but we always bring our own. There are camping and day use facilities available to have a picnic (some have charcoal grills). A seasonal concession stand (reasonably priced) offers food, camping supplies and ice cream. There also enjoy running on a 3 mile trail that surrounds the lake. This is a very beautiful lake, surrounded by tall pines.
We were very happy with our recent stay. The grounds are beautifully maintained and the washrooms were the cleanist I have encountered at a campground. That is a big plus for me. It is obvious that the people running this place take pride in what they do. We stayed in Site # D93 which was the largest and most private site we have ever stayed in anywhere in Canada or the US. The campground was very quiet with a lot of empty sites which was surprizing to me for mid August. The concession sells wood at $5.00 for a fair sized bundle more than what you get outside the park - they will even bring it to your site. The nearest town of Wellsboro is a beautiful town with a lot of old well maintained homes, a good downtown and good restaurants. It's a nice place to walk around and browse thru stores. We went to the Sunday buffet at the older Hotel on the main street in Wellsboro and were pleased. This is a great area for us to visit as only 5 hours from home in Canada and we couldn't have picked a better spot for some rest and relaxation. Everyone at Hills Creek Part was very helpful and friendly. This is definitely at the top of our list to come back to.Deb.
Beautiful motor-free fishing and good swimming area. Fantastic trail around the entire lake and throughout the large campground. Very well maintained and well wooded campsites with lots of space options.
Quiet, clean, fishing, hiking/trail running, nice campsitesClose to Wellsboro and Grand Canyon. Also located close to Mansfield University.
My husband and I camped here in our travel trailer for 5 nights in early June. What a great place - - quiet, secluded and peaceful! There is a 160+ acre lake, which we did not use, but drove past every day, so pretty and clean, with a nice beach area. All the campsites are very spacious, so you're not sitting right on top of one another. Although our site had electricity, there was no sewer hook-up, so be sure to fill your tanks at the water sites provided before settling in. Each site appeared to have a sturdy fire ring and a super heavy picnic table - we cooked on the fire almost daily. The bath house was extremely clean and we noticed staff making daily cleaning rounds. We left a cooler out one night, filled with Coke, Diet Gingerale and bottled water - a black bear paid us a visit that night. The area surrounding Hills Creek is beautiful - definitely go to Wellsboro - - a quaint little village with cute shops and good food - we ate at a Bagel place for lunch one day - good food. Also close by is the Rail Trail - an old railroad, now converted into a bike and horse path, well maintained and very easy biking along Pine Creek (we did 18 miles one afternoon on rented bikes). Also not to be missed is a trip to Corning, NY - - maybe 45 minutes away. The Corning Museum of Glass was a great way to spend the morning. Also nearby is the Leonard Harrison State Park - - there is a fantastic overlook of the Grand Canyon of PA - - breath taking vistas and easy hiking trails.
This was our first trip to Hills Creek and it was a wonderful vacation. We rented a modern cabin and it was clean, spacious, very comfortable and felt very private. We swam in the lake every day and went fishing and took a side trip over to the PA Grand Canyon (only a half hour away). It is a great park and I recommend it highly. The best value ever for a family vacation!
Hard to believe that Hills Creek is man-made given its natural contours, perfect for motor-free boating; my sister's favorite lake for kayaking. I lived nearby so can't speak about their camping facilities but I've attended nature talks there and a friend of mine runs the birding walks and monitors the nest boxes so I know it's a great place to see wildlife and enjoy nature. My personal favorite is the hiking path which surrounds the lake.
We go up there to take pictures of the leaves. I live close by in Wellsboro so I do not camp there. It is a place to go for relaxation. I have used the beach in the past. My trips to the park are usually day visits.
