We came here with our two boys aged 9 and 8 while travelling the Dino Trail. We are in a hire car and couldn't do the dirt road so did a tour with Matilda Country Tours. Our guide tanya was sheer country hospitality with lots of information about country stations and plants and the area. The road is not great, part paved, but the dirt part has bull dust and corrugations but we've certainly driven worse and I wouldn't let the road stop you. Our guide was very informative, a touch dry but our two boys maintained interest and listened for the full tour. Great to see the footprints and understand the science of figuring out history from just footprints and also the story of finding and excavating the prints. Great experience if you are keen on dinosaurs and it is the only stampede in the world.
We visited this as part of our Aussie Outback Legendary Longreach and Winton tour; and it was well worth the trip out from Winton. The amazing set of circumstances as to how they were discovered, developed and preserved was fantastic in itself. To stare at the giant footprints of a carnivorous dinosaur and the myriad of tiny beasties seeking to escape and realise that you're looking at something that has been there for a 100 million years - blows you away. Loved it.
While there are other dinosaur footprint sites to visit in the world there is only one stampede site and this is it. Until recently it wasn't thought that there were many large dinosaurs that left any traces in Australia - not any more. Take food and water - the trip will take about 1/12 hours in a normal sedan or non-4WD or 1 hour in a 4WD - mostly dirt of varying quality. The tour and information provided is excellent and a walk around the site afterwards a pleasant interlude - remember your hat and sunscreen.
I visited outside the main tourist season, I mention this because heat was a factor & having arrived early due to the trip taking way less time than anticipated there was not much do except sit in the car with the aircon going full blast. The story told on the displays outside the hall is very interesting unfortunately it is inaccurate & needs updating. As for the exhibit itself there is only one viewing platform & I found the whole experience a little underwhelming. Science appears to have got from the site all that it required decades ago & it's hard to see where the money would come from to make this a must see attraction.
A truly amazing experience. To be standing near where a huge dinosaur attacked smaller bird-like dinosaurs, leaving their tracks for people of the future to see is truly awe-inspiring. People of all ages should put this site on their bucket list!My friend and I have mobility issues (I use a walker and my friend uses a walking stick) and we had no problems whatsoever. For the walk around the site, I hung onto my friend's arm.Spectacular scenery, fascinating exhibit, wonderful guide and helpful and informative tour guide, Tanya.
It takes about an hour to get to Lark Quarry, but is well worth the time. Make sure you get there in time to do the guided tour. Our guide really made the story of the stampede come to life and his knowledge of the local area and dinosaurs was fantastic. His dry sense of humour really made the presentation unforgetable.
We visited the Lark Quarry Trackways whilst on the Dinosaur Trail. I personally was really loking forward to seeing this and I can say I was not dissapointed. It was really amazing and thought-provoking to stand and gaze at over 3000 dinosaur footprints! Our guide Bill was very informative and knowlegable. The drive from Winton is 110km each way, and only 55km are road - the other half is gravel. They recommend you check weather conditions and phone the site before setting off just in case. Make sure you take drinks/snacks/lunch with you as there is absolutely nothing there. Also make sure you know the tour times as there is nothing to do in between tours if you happen to arrive late.
Beautiful scenery and the only place in the world you can see this. State of the art facility and informative tour guides.
Lark Quarry was part of our Extended dinosaur pass of four main attractions within the "Dinosaur Triangle". If you are a lover of dinosaurs and pre-history, then you will want to visit here for the unique experience of viewing a fossilized 95 million year old dinosaur stampede with over 3,300 immortalized footprints found nowhere else on earth. The 110km road in from Winton, can be very rough. The first 50km or so is bitumen and the rest is dirt with sometimes heavy sand and corrugations although this will obviously change throughout the year and after grading since trucks frequent part of this road as-well.You can only view this marvel with a guided tour three times a day at 10am, 12pm and 2pm.Your guide is very informative, knowledgeable of the area and with the history regarding the discovery of this wonder.A detailed explanation of the preservation, types of dinosaurs and much more is very interesting and well worth the trip. There are also a couple of walks around the conservation park through the spinifex and lovely earthy tone landscapes.
If your really into dinosaurs, or want to experience the whole dinosaur track attractions you will enjoy it if not pass and do something else..the drive out took us 1 hour even though others will take longer if not use to driving on dirt road. Its not that bad of a road, we have been on worse but as i said if your not use to driving on dirt road or afraid of dirtying your car dont bother. Also wouldnt advise taking a caravan. Our 9 year old was interested in seeing the footprints and was impressed but only for a short while as the tour guy was a bit boring and not very exciting for him. Could improve on a few things ig, a vending machine for cold drinks or water, and souvenirs.
