Truly stunning vistas and solitude are the reason to ride White Rim. Assess your conditioning and experience honestly before you decide on riding. There are no services of any sort and no bail-outs on this 100-mile loop. Some sections are well graded dirt, but most are simply a double-track 4wd trail. If you are less experienced, chose a qualified outfitter for a well-supported, multi-day trip. More experienced riders may put in for a required Park Service permit (overnight trips) and provide their own support while camping in designated sites along the trail. Typically, groups will camp 2 - 3 nights. Very well-conditioned riders do White Rim in one day (no permit required). Choose an appropriate time of year to avoid extreme heat / cold. It is an awe-inspiring ride for those who are experienced and well-prepared.
What everyone else said.......!!!Really good ride but important to be fully prepared for all eventualities ;)
Before you even consider driving this road, don't make the same mistake I did. Research it. Research it well. This is not a short jaunt through Canyonlands. This is not designed for your 4WD Subaru, small truck or SUV. This is not even designed for a jeep unless you have proper gauge tires designed for off-roading. What this road (and I use that term with great caution) is: a stunning 110 mile loop drive (or bike ride) over steep switchbacks, along the rims of box canyons with 500+ foot sheer drop-offs, over wicked steep, rocky hog backs and through arroyos. You will not exceed 10 mph on this road unless you wish to find yourself in the Colorado River without a raft. You should be prepared to spend at least 9-10 hours if you complete the loop. There are no side roads if you need an escape hatch. It's a commitment. However, if you are prepared, you will see some of the most remote, amazing scenery imaginable, including needle-like hoodoos rising from the canyon flood, red cliffs gleaming in the sun, and maze-like passages worn through sandstone. What you'll need: water to last for at least two days, a full-size spare tire, extra food, blankets, first-aid kit, etc. This is serious back country. Be prepared, enter with the appropriate vehicle, and you'll have an amazing experience on this once-in-a-lifetime journey.
Rode this on my xt225 motorcycle with a group of friends and it was stunning. Amazing. I was drop jawed in awe most of the time. What an incredible way to see the landscape! A pinnacle moment in my life - it was just that beautiful!
The white rim trail is a awesome trip that takes a year in planning if you want to camp along the way. You must have a permit for the campsites. To do the trail justice you need to spend at least two nights on the trail. We were rained out last year which is a possibility each and every year but if you get to go it will be a awesome experience! The stars are spectacular and you will talk about this experience for years to come!!!!!
We initially thought we would ride this 105-mile trail on bicycles but a shoulder injury two days before turned me into a SAG wagon driver. We went in October, 2009 and the weather was perfect for all five days of the ride. Our vehicle was 4WD but did not have a low-range capability which was not a good idea. They greatly discourage that now. There are three tough 4-wheel-drive climbs for the support vehicles along with sandwashes and the road is ROUGH and rocky pretty much for the entire length of the trail. Plan carefully, get your camping permits, take plenty of food and water and enjoy the ride. On the other hand, if you're riding it all in one day, good luck! We had a rental Jeep with German tourists come through the first section late at night. They planned to do the entire trail in one night. We didn't find any bodies so we guessed they made it out. We were thinking they were really tired when they did finish.
For a great view of the canyons and the river this is a must do ride. To go to Moab and like to go off road and see what few see this is the trip to take. This is a one hundred twenty mile loop all dirt two track ride .You will start up top on the paved road and go all the way down to the river and back up
The start of this trail is not for the faint of heart! It is a narrow, rough trails the skirt the edge of the rock as you travel down into the canyon. The views are unbelievable! Once you are in to the canyon, the road goes for several miles until you connect with Potash Road. The going is rough and there are plenty of areas where flooding occurs after the rains. Be prepared, make sure you vehicle is properly equipped. We only saw a few other vehicles while we were there...pure paradise all to ourselves. We had lunch amid towering rock, cacti and beautiful silence. There are views of the Colorado River and Dead Horse State Park. Once you get to Potash Road, the pavement returns and you follow the Colorado River back into town. Great way to spend a day!
The a White Rim is a short trail on paper, but looong when you're actually on it. The trail gets a little gnarly in some places, but the views are amazing.
