ShuiLuAn Temple is located in LanTian County about 60 kilometers to the southeast of Xi'an downtown. This temple was built more than one thousand years ago and during the Ming Dynasty, it served as one of the royal temples because the emperor of Ming ordered that monks here to bless his express mother for her good fortune and good health. The most amazing part is that of the the chapels has almost three thousand figurines carved and hanging inside the building. they are telling Buddhist stories, all these little figures are vivid, and colored from ancient times. Over a thousand years ago, artisans made tiny glazed balls and put them in the statue to symbolize their eyeballs, even today, they are still shiny like real. The backdrop of the temple is the beautiful QinLing Mountain Range ( dividing line of North China and South China). Nearby the ShuiLuAn Temple are some local farming villages that shows the real farming life of people in North China, Other than visiting the monastery, it is also very interesting to walk around in the farming village and have a touch of the life of Chinese people.
About 30 miles SE of Xian, Shuilu was built around 600 AD and is best know for the more than 3000 carved clay figures from the Ming Dynasty. Each small figures is vividly colored and apparently individualized. Didn't see any foreign tourists there during our visit. In some ways, the figures remind some of Mogao caves, but obviously not on as grand a scale as any of the four main grottoes I've seen. On the other hand, less time required to digest, and near a large city.
