Tough course not intended for the casual once or twice a year golfer. If you enjoy a true championship caliber challenge then look no further. Jim Scott the greenskeeper always has this course in great shape, with best greens in the area.
I golfed Kampen this weekend after hearing from my friends on how great the course is. The greens and fairways are very nice and very well kept and probably the only saving grace. I played this course from the white tees as I am usually a +24 handicap and shot much better than expected (88). I did not find the course terribly difficult as long as you do not "go for it" on every shot. The course is made difficult due to the tall grass and nasty wastelands that litter the course. These types of hazards are not made to make the course "tournament grade" ; rather keep peoples scores high so, that the player feels that the course is extremely difficult and thus worth the high prices. On other tournament grade courses I have played the hazards definitely penalized a player for making an errant shot, but usually it was at least possible to play the ball even if that means chipping out sideways. The wastelands at Kampen are filled with shrubs which are impossible to hit out of, and if you are lucky enough to have a somewhat open shot the ground is nothing but pea gravel which does wonders on your clubs. I did not end up in the hazards often, but just hated how they were everywhere and not very appealing to the eye.As far as the experience with the personnel I was extremely disappointed. Every hole we played there was a ranger driving around. Not that I do not respect the game of golf, nor the course but being watched every hole makes one very uncomfortable. We were a group of 3 who was playing behind a foursome and playing ahead of a fivesome. We had to wait for the group in front of us on holes 3 through 9. At the turn we decided to stop and get some food and drinks since we had a over a full hole advantage over the group behind us. After at least 10 to 15 minutes waiting on food and drinks we were able to finish proceed to the 10th. Upon finishing hole 10 we were approached by one of the rangers who told us to "pick up the pace" because there was a full hole between us and the group in front. Nothing is more infuriating than being told to pick up the pace after waiting for a group in front of you for 7 holes. Just to note we were waiting on the same group by hole 13.... This course was nice, but not worth the $65+ per person. I'll stick to Ackerman Hills, at least as long as its open.
This is a challenging course with the touch of Pete Dye on every hole. Played it three (3) times. It used to be a wide open tract (North Course) that was wide open and I used to play it virtually alone. Now it is a first-class run that requires your A-game. Look forward to my next visit.
This Pete Dye design is home of the Purdue Boilermaker golf teams. The course is an understated gem with a variety of views adjacent to the course. The range used distance controlled balls but other than that the facility was wonderful.
This course is a really good course; well maintained and very challenging. I can't recommend it for the higher handicap player.
