This is fantastic place to visit, particularly if you are with your kids. They can learn a lot about the different species of fish that are present in the area of Kentucky and Tennessee. Adjacent to the hatchery there's a camp ground and it is located right few distance from the Cumberland River and the Wolf Creek Dam.
We decided to visit after leaving the state park on the way home. This was a few miles out of the way, but well worth the visit!Be sure to visit the main building first. You'll get a nice little self guided tour, and the volunteers will play an educational video for you in a viewing room. You can then walk through the indoor hatching area and see the different species and sizes of fish. It's amazing how the room is so cool by using the water from Lake Cumberland! The outdoor fish runs are a good walk, but worth it. I was floored at how many fish they raise here! Good stop, and well worth the money... oh wait.. there is no charge!
My son loved it. They have a small educational display inside the main building and a cute gift shop. You can purchase food and actually go all thought the hatchery and feed the fish if you like. My son loved looking at the fish in the different areas outside. Once a year they hold a huge fishing derby for the kids and release tons of fish in the lake for it.
Feeding the fingerlings in the outdoor tanks. Amazing! The talking manikin Dale:-) The live fish feeding in one of the tanks, creepy, but very interesting!
Must see in the area if you are in the lake Cumberland area vacationing, visiting. Take the fish hatchery in along with the dam, and you have a great 1/2 day of fun planned for the whole family.
Stopping at the Fish Hatchery at the Wolf Creek Dam is something I highly suggest for any type of traveler.
At varying times there are fish hatchery operations, & it's fascinating to enjoy the operation, & see the beauty of KY hills, rushing waters of the Wolf River, plus the huge, deep, lake. There are plenty of places prepared to view the Dam & surroundings.
I moved here a local here about 10 years ago and am always exploring new places. My husband and I are avid outdoors people. Fishing is our passion. We visited.this hatchery and many others, but this one is the best by far. It's a great place to take the kids. They have many animals/insects/nature things on display for the kids to learn about.
Just love it there, and the fishing is always great. This is a great spot for biking and the kids always have a great time there. Love camping in the Anex but it is closed for the new Trout Stream Project.
Wonderful stop for everyone. My kids range from 11-18 and they all had a wonderful time. We were camping at Dale Hollow State Park and drove over. Short trip through pretty country and spent a long time at the Dam and Fish Hatchery. Would recommend.
