Definitely a nice drive. Once you get to the top you can look down on downtown Breck. Beautiful street lamps to guide the path.
Boreas Pass (Como to Breckenridge over the mountain), which is only open in the summer months, is a beautiful drive with many, many places to stop for photo ops. You'll encounter wildlife, flower-filled meadows, great mountain views, clear mountain streams and old mining ruins. We've only done this route in the car, but you'll also see hikers and occasionally bikers, so it's important to honor the 10-15 mph speed limit. It's a narrow one-lane dirt road, so watch out for oncoming cars and be ready to pull over or back up a ways. It takes about an hour to cross the pass, and I wouldn't recommend it during bad weather, because you won't get the full effect. If you're crossing from Breckenridge to Como, you might want to take 285 East to Bailey to enjoy a local restaurant or the winery, or go West on 285 to FairPlay and then back to Breckenridge. FairPlay has a handful of good restaurants and also South Park City, so you could make a day of it.
This road follows the old railroad line that connected Como and Breckenridge. In the fall it becomes jammed with people looking at the changing colors.
I took the short drive from Breckenridge with my wife and young girls (7 & 10), not really knowing what we would see. It had snowed a couple days earlier, and we found exactly what other reviewers have been describing -- a tranquil and beautiful trail with stunning views. Well worth the time.
I like to run on Boreas Pass road in the summer or hike on it in the Winter when the pass in closed. This is a LONG road and there are no services, so make sure you are gassed up!
Better for car or bike than for hiking. There are many better hikes around Breck. It follows an old steam railway.
This drive is breath taking! We just kept driving and driving. The road at places get narrow and wide but always straight down on one side. The most beautiful views and great hikes.
The most treacherous pass I have ever seen when it is snowing; reverse banked 90 degree corners, in a 4x4 I still went sideways due to the slippery road. Saw multiple accidents and stuck vehicles; AVOID if it is snowing!!!
We took a drive on the road out of curiosity. The road was well paved and maintained because there are many excellent homes and developments along the way. There is very little commercial development or services. But it is only a short drive back down to Breckenridge. There are a couple of nice scenic pull outs that give a majestic view of the town below and the Breckenridge Ski Area on the mountain across the valley.
We went up to see the truth & it delivers. I think this pass should be visited any season for a good scenic view.
