This Basilica is well worth the time spent. The Basilicas tend to go on and on after a while but if you are trying to narrow down a group of them be sure to incllude this one. Really lovely..... and the Holy Stairs are right accross the road as well :) note. If you want to go up the Holy Stairs don't go over during riposa as they close :(
The most amazing basilica I ever saw. Impressive and quite easy to visit besides being free. you can get by either walking or several means of transportation from downtown or the coliseum. Quite worth the visit and expect to stay at least half an hour at the site due to its size and all the details to see. A must see when in Rome.
This basilica is a very complex site. But it is one of the most beautiful in Italy. The facade is beautifully simple and elegant and not over stylized. It has an imposing beauty to it.It is actually built on land once owned by a family in ancient Rome - who had their villa in this location. The surrounding area still has that peaceful and secluded feel to it.There are a couple of astonishing finds inside this complex. One being the magnificent bronze doors which were taken from the original ancient forum and placed here. They are a beautiful copper green and very impressive. One of the things I was really looking forward to - is an altar within the basilica which has a bronze pediment and bronze corinthian columns. You can't miss them. They are huge. These were actually taken from the Temple of Jupiter (the most important temple of ancient rome). And where the Spanish steps lead you to - is where this enormous temple and others once stood. Visible for miles around.Believe it or not - this Bronze Altar is from the Temple of Jupiter. Even more amazing - is that the bronze was melted down after the naval battle with Anthony & Cleopatra - from the rendered down rudders of the Egyptian Navy who were defeated. And this luxurious work of ancient art was placed inside the Temple of Jupiter. In the Rennaissance - the temple of Jupiter was still in excellent condition but once again - as is so often the case. It was demolished and all the materials used in constructing the buildings that are now on that acropolis. Some designed by Michelangelo. We can but imagine what the temple complex would have looked like in its and ancient form. But there is a marble relief you can find online - showing what the temple of Jupiter looked like in its magnificence. The bronze pediment and columns from the internal altar to Jupiter where taken from the Temple and placed in the new Basilica. An act of vandalism by the over-decorators of the middle ages. This kind of theft is known as: Spolia. Where ancient art and materials are placed in newer buildings. Hoping to emulate some of the grandeur of ancient rome and usually failing.I really enjoyed the visit to this beautiful building. For a small donation - there is an entrance to an external area of gardens with a collonade on four sides. Be sure to take your seat at the bronze altar and admire it for its complexity and skill. It is free to enter this basilica. I also really enjoyed the beauty of the enormous marble columns in the portico of the basilica. They are so beautifully carved and ice cold to touch. A real achievement on a grand scale. So we have to give the later architects some credit. This building is much more beautiful than St.Peter's in my opinion. Enjoy.
This church was close to where we stayed in Rome. The first time we went we went in an unassuming side door. Once inside it is opulent, and awe inspiring. After reading that the original bronze door from the Senate is at the front of the church, we went back to see the front. Wow! Just the facade of this church is something to behold!
