You won't be disappointed, especially the older works. The newer exhibits are sometimes not worth the effort, but that is true about a lot of contemporary art. Still the museum as a whole is worth visiting over and over. And don't miss the bathrooms on the lower floor.
Excellent temporary exhibit of landscape photography by Anne Whiston Spirn. The contemporary collection has interesting pieces by less well-known Russian artists living abroad as well as good examples of works by well-known artists.
My wife and I were visiting family nearby and looking for a museum to visit. We came across Smith's museum online and decided to check it out. WHAT A COLLECTION! Seriously shocked when we saw Renoir, Degas, Warhol, Seurat, Picasso, Durer, and Monet to name just a few. This museum is phenomenal. If you're in the area it's worth your time. Also, Benjamin was extremely friendly and knowledgeable.
I take visitors (out of town family and friends) to Smith's Art Museum a lot. It's a wonderful museum with interesting traveling exhibits that are always changing...And it's free for anyone with a current student ID!!
Wonderful collection, especially of Impressionism. Usually they have interesting special exhibits in addition to the stunning permanent collection. Make sure to go into the bathroom with the art on the toilets and sinks. The men and women's are different and both pretty cool.
We enjoyed our visit to Smith College Museum of Art, they have a very nice, quality collection. The variety and scope of artists is amazing! Definitely worth a trip of three!
A remarkable collection in this museum of manageable size. Great collection of American "primitives," French 19th c. paintings by the greatest artists--and some wonderful pieces by some less famous. It also has beautiful walls--including in the ceramic tiled bathroom!
wonderful museum with great collection and not crowded you can really get up close to the paintings, sculptures, wood cuts.
Wonderful pastiche of western art, providing teasers of less-famous works (generally) of very well-known artists. Much broader and more ambitious than I imagined. Parking was easy, and it was a free, family day on the day of our visit. Helpful and friendly staff too. Highly recommended.
Smith has a nice modern collection open for viewing while the main part of their musem is closed for renovation. A gem of a Diebenkorn,a picture not so perfect Alice Neel,a Kline with the subtlest colors mixed into his standard black and white.....are just a few of the delights that wait to be discovered. And then there is the bathroom!!!Yup, the bathroom! Designed by artists and complete with a developing story from the moment you open the door. The best part were the toilets! Thankfully the stalls were empty and I could peruse each individual toilet. Rich cobalt blue images snaked around and through each bowl, the walls were covered with hand created tiles in the same color motif and the floor was made of tiny gem like blue tiles.
