We found the price of admission - more than £12 per adult - to be very expensive. Annoyingly, you also have to pay extra for a guide book (£1.50 for a small one, £5 for a large one). As there is next to no information when you're walking around the abbey itself, if you don't buy a guide book you don't know what you're looking at, which makes the visit a lot less interesting. The small guide book should definitely be included in the price of admission. There was a small museum in the Porter's House which was quite interesting. The grounds are large and well looked after but there's not that much of interest other than the abbey itself to be honest. A few follies. The water garden was disappointing. We had a nice day wandering around in good company, but could have done this for free or for much less money in many other places: Bolton Abbey, for example.
A lovely day out for everyone. The relaxed atmosphere allows families to picnic in glorious surroundings on manicured lawns. The ruins are magnificent and are preserved well by The National Trust. A place I will never tire of visiting.
Stayed at the National trust run apartments in the large house and grounds of Fountains Abbey.Absolutely everything you could require provided including free wifi.Large rooms, and freedom to roam the grounds when the public have all gone home!
Excellent walk around the grounds. We took our wellys and walked through the tunnels up stream. Not sure if we should have, but it felt very adventurous. What a magical setting.
This place is a must with outstanding ruins, beautiful gardens, architecture & the most relaxing place to be. Easy to spend a good 2-3 hours with the most impressive views!
As with all National Trust properties there is a good reception area with helpful volunteers to welcome and advise.Plenty of options for a cup of coffee or retail therapy in the National Trust shop selling national and local items. There is a short walk down to the abbey ruins which you can wander around unhindered by fences and ropes. A fantastic place for taking photographs. This is a big site and we could not manage to walk around the whole site. There were electric scooters available for those with limited mobility - if required it would be worth making enquiries prior to arrival. This site is free for National Trust members and the web site also says free for English Heritage members too. Otherwise adults are £12.10 with children half price.
