Trip organised by Tom from Cracow4YOU. Excellent transfer to and from the mine. Tom spoke brilliant English and was able to answer our many questions on the history of Poland. Tom organised the tickets and photography pass for us. Brilliant trip.
Everything about this place is amazing, starting from the stairs down the mine, through the salt mine chambers and tourist attractions, up to the ride with a lift back up top. The views are spectacular and you will be amazed at what people could do so long ago. If you have a day to spare while visiting Krakow, this place is a must.
Very interesting and a must see attraction. We spent around 2 and half hours here and most of that time you are walking, so can be very tiring on the legs. The main Chapel is breathtaking, everything from the walls, floor, chandeliers are made from salt. Excellent day out.
Okay so this place is vast and to an extent it's fascinating to see the scale of the mine and the carvings that have been created here. It was also a bit of an odd experience though I felt. The tourist trail is all very glossy with cheesy mannequins carved out of salt in places and huge statues (again carved out of salt) in other rooms and the whole thing doesn't really feel like a mine at all if i'm honest. I think i'd rather it hadn't been made to look so perfect for the tourists but had maintained the look of a mine. Some of the tunnels you walk through do look like a classic mine tunnel from a movie but mainly you are led through to huge cathedral sized areas with carvings and chandeliers in them (again the carvings and chandeliers are all made of salt - the main offering of this trip is that you are meant to be amazed at the things that have been created out of salt). I think this is meant to be awe inspiring and it is impressive but i'd rather it was just a nice tour through a real working mine. And it is a real working mine...you even see the odd mine worker with his hard hat on wandering past part of the tourist trail route on his or her way to do some real mining in the real working mine areas...but you won't get to see any of that. You are there to go 'wow this is huge! and wow look at what they've carved out of salt! and gosh they've got a church down in this mine. Wow!' and call me cynical but I was a little disappointed by that. Did I enjoy the tour? Yes I did. Is it worth doing? Yes it is! But A) you're on a tourist route so don't expect to see real mining action and B) the salt has mixed with minerals to therefore be a rather dull grey colour so it's not going to be a beautiful white shiny mine experience. It doesn't really look like salt as we know it at all. But lick the wall and yeah it is salt and I guess that's vaguely exciting. Also this is a big commercial place...expect a tourist salt selling stuff shop at every turn. I also think this place would benefit from a map on a wall every now and then. You are continuously told how big this place is and that you will only experience 1% of the mine on your 2 hour experience but you never get to see a visual guide to just how vast the place is or indeed to where the hell you are within the mine maze.I did my tour with See Krakow and they looked after us perfectly. Its worth booking the Auschwitz and Salt Mine combined tour purely for reasons of saving money I think. Overall the Salt Mine is worth doing but if you only have time for one trip outside of the city i'd go with the trip to Auschwitz for definite.
Booked via a tour company. Service of which was prompt and efficient. Tour organised well with regards to tour guide, transfers, admission, direction, etc. However value for money is questionable! Previous day spent 7 hours for the same price (280 PLN/roughly €70 x2 adult's) for both concentration camps tours. Although both are hard to compare against, I felt my overall expectations of the salt mines were limited. Although there were great views , I felt personally there was a lot of repetition in the tour and a lot of waiting around in queues to allow for different tour groups to move from one exhibit to the next. The audio guide is a great bonus, however in parts the audio didn't work and you were left at times not hearing what the guide was explaining/showing etc, also noticed by other visitors. The main aspect for me was the cathedral at the end, by far the most breathtaking part of the tour, but I did think it was excessive to charge an extra fee just to take more photos here after the initial admission fee. Overall great to tick off the bucket list, but in regards impact, unless you really have a keen interest, there is more to see in this amazing and beautiful city especially during a short visit.
While I think the tour was a bit long, but I think that was due to the size of the group (30 people) who didn't listen to time and meeting spots. The underground statues and cathedral were spectacular. Hard to believe it was all carved by hand. It was like another world. Very cool place to visit.
Went on a visit with a tour group, general feeling of the mine was that it was pretty fascinating to see and feel the salt.We had the lovely Tina as a guide on our english tour - incredibly knowledgeable on all parts of the mine, it's history and current focus. The negatives of the mine was how commercialised it has become, feeling like it wants to suck money from you in every chamber you visit. There's at least 5 gift shops throughout the underground tunnels, multiple foods shops, a restaurant, etc - you get the idea, a very successful business.Worth a visit if you have a spare afternoon.
