They have done a great job with the waterfront trail through the Durham Region outside of Toronto.I have ridden from Oshawa, through Whitby, Ajax and Pickering right into Scarborough. Most of the trail follows the shoreline and is paved and very scenic. Sometimes you have to watch for the signs as the trail moves through neighbourhoods. This would be a complaint because the signage is sometimes few and far between and not easily visible. It would be nice if there were some bathrooms along the way as well.I generally ride 10-15 miles 2-4 times a week when I can.I love it!
We have always loved walking along the waterfront in the Pickering/Scarborough area and now it is even better. Now that the entire trail is open along this section, we can walk from Petticoat Creek to Colonel Danforth Park in Scarborough. I love that the trial is paved and located right beside the water. The trail is quite busy on weekends with many people walking, cycling and in line skating. You can people watch and count the trains that go by as you enjoy the fresh air!
Trail well marked, all basically asphalt, good for hiking, biking, rollerblading ... geocaches close by! (my new favourite outdoor hobby)
Jump on a bike or choose to hike. Good scenic workout. If you prefer bring a fishing rod for the river or some sunscreen for the beach. Me? I go for the ride and to sit under a tree with music in my ear and a good book...
A great walking trail. Lake view most of trail. Wide enough for bikes and strollers. Could have more interesting stopping points, Cafe, ice-cream, food truck maybe.
Decent parking (except on summer evenings) and a couple decent eateries. Walkable and wheelchair accessible for many km to the east. Lots of kiddy activities -- swing sets, slides, sprinkler water park during summer) and sand for volleyball. Washrooms are decent. Decent view of Lake ontario (and the power plant :-( Too bad the c is so truck too expensive.
The first cycle in 2014 and it was long overdue. This was the perfect trail to start this on. Coming back for more.
I last walked the trail just after the ice storm and it was magical. I bring all my visitors for a hike on the trail and they always impressed that we have such an amenity so close to hand
Living handy I am on this trail often. There are many things to see and do along the way. Totem poles, the lake, children's playgrounds, off leash dog parks. Great for cycling or walking. Wonderful on a hot summer day. Oh yes, and there are snack vendors along the way so you can quench your thirst or grab a treat.
I have travelled to numerous places for cycling holidays. Few have compared to the Waterfront Trail. The Waterfront Trail has a variety of scenery. It has sections that follow the shoreline of Lake Ontario. It also has sections going through neighbourhoods and parks.I enjoy the variety and length. There are many restaurants, bike shops and just about anything you might need to make a ride enjoyable. I have gone for many all day rides alone and with friends.I have been disappointed in the past by going to places that are converted rail trails. They are straight. My wife and I were very disappointed by the rail trail on Cape Cod. The advertising made it sound like bicycling heaven! It was straight and looked onto the backs of people's homes and the backs of small industrial units. The Waterfront Trail is not like the Cape Cod Rail Trail. It has lots of curves and beautiful views. If you are looking for a holiday that includes lots of recreational cycling I would recommend The Waterfront Trail from Pickering to Hamilton. I would also recommend the North shore of Lake Erie, especially from Port Maitland to Port Dover; and La Route Verte in Quebec.
