Stopped here on a ride from cape Elizabeth to south portland....lucky us...the place was everything people said and more. Sandwich outstanding...pie...oh yes the blue berry pie...wow...
This place is so good I went there twice in one day. A perfect Saturday in July - I stopped by once in the morning on the way to Old Orchard Beach...looking for sandwiches to pack in a picnic lunch (to have later on the beach). There were at least 6 or 7 premade sandwiches and it took me a while to choose. I selected the Cubano and the very nice lady behind the counter pressed it for me. When I had it later I regretted buying only one. The bread was so fresh, the cold cuts perfectly tasty, it had a nice kick...perfect Cuban sandwich. We also grabbed some drinks and one of their giant brownies (also delish) for the beach. On the way back from the beach we stopped there again to get appetizer-y things to have before dinner that night. The same lady behind the counter suggested a nice herb covered creamy Cheedaresque cheese, when I told her my favorite cheese is Cotswold. I got to sample it before purchasing. The guy behind the counter was slicing paper thin slices of Soppressata, which I also bought. YUM. Crunchy, tangy cornichons from the refrigerated case went well with my other selections. Wish I lived closer; I'd be at the Cheese Iron every single day.
I stopped in to get a sandwich, and to check out the store, because I had heard so many rave reviews from friends of ours. What a great shop! The owners and staff are super friendly. I had a Cuban Panini, and it was very tasty. I only had to wait about a minute for my sandwich, (super fast, even at 12:30pm!), and I bought a few items from the deli case, all of which were awesome; Orecchieti Pasta, and Dolmas as sides for dinner, and Tuna Salad for lunch the next day. I also found some very high quality, and well-priced dry Pappardelle that I am making for dinner this week. Great selection of cheeses, and a nice assortment of wines, as well. A must stop, for many reasons...
Hubs and I stopped on a rainy day. We got some cheeses and a small pepperoni and some italian salami. Also, for our picnic, we got some sodas. Very nice people working behind the counters.
The cheese Iron is a great lil place if you like good cheese and meat with a little wine. Staff was awesome on recommending cheeses for our group and also let us taste the cheeses recommended. Store was set up perfect for this type of business. I wish them the best. More places need this type of specialty stores.
Today I walked into The Cheese Iron, as I have many times and said to Vince - I have to use up kale, spinach, and beets and I'm going to mix them together. Will that taste good? He looked at me and said - yup and it needs pancetta. As always, he is 100% right. I do this all the time and I'm so relieved how the owners and staff of The Cheese Iron help me with my cooking dilemmas, my coffee needs, my lunchtime hunger, sweet fixes, and grabbing that perfect bottle of wine, port, bubbly...The Cheese Iron is my go to place for an entire meal, part of a meal, gift certificates for my son's teachers, gifts for friends, a quick fix of caffeine, sugar, cheese and crackers and olives - and now lunch food and sushi and salads and soups. I have even stopped in once and said - here's what I have in the fridge any ideas of how to make a meal of that? Someone always knows and they are happy to lend support and their knowledge to make food appealing and lovely. I highly recommend a stop in The Cheese Iron if you live in Maine or are just passing through. You won't leave empty handed and you will be richer for your experience.
I stopped here a year ago. Now everytime I am in the Portland area, I must stop. Amazing cheese selection, but I go for the sandwiches. Try the cuban.
I wouldn't say this is an attraction but a restaurant. Fancy little shop with restroom. Cheese, wine, meats, and specialty items for sale. I had the turkey panini and my wife got a special panini with spicy salami on it. Both sandwiches were good. We also tried the sea salted chocolate chip cookies and the white chocolate biscoti. We tried the ginger root pop, not our taste very strong ginger. But we also had the Maine rootbeer and the mexicane cola maine root. I would definitely stop in again, it is higher cost as it is a specialty store/restaurant, we spent $26.71 still reasonable for the store.
Stopped in here after seeing the other reviews on TA. What a beautiful shop. Staff very friendly and helpful. Sandwiches are so delicious on fresh baked rosemary foccacia. They have a few tables inside and out if you want to stay and eat or you can take out. Nice wines, cheeses, salads and great baked goods. Of course they have blueberry pie but the lemon bars seemed to be flying out the door. Such a nice store. Would highly recommend and go back here in a second.
If you're in Scarborough, make the time to stop here. They have outstanding goodies. The staff are knowledgeable and friendly. I got some amazing local cheese as well as some stupendous imports. yumm! We got some wonderful things for a picnic for the drive up Rt 1. I will go back whenever I'm in town. This is a must stop place.
